Arrears - Money that is owed and should already have been paid.

Debtor - A person, country, or organisation that owes money.
Student loans force students to graduate as debtors.

Bankrupt - unable to pay what you owe, and having had control of your

He went bankrupt after only a year in business.

保释卡,免狱牌
(A) get out of jail free card - Something or a situation that allows you to avoid an unpleasant result of your actions, for example a punishment.
I'm afraid there's no get out of jail free card when it comes to your taxes. You either pay them, or you pay the fine.

Becoming bankrupt is not a get out of jail free card.

Debt collector - A person or company that collects payments from people who have failed to pay the money they owe.
To write sth off - To accept that an amount of money has been lost or that a debt will not be paid.
The World Bank is being urged to write off debts from developing countries.

My debts were written off years ago.
我的债务几年前就一笔勾销了。

A clean slate - An absence of existing restraints or commitments.
I felt like I could start again with a clean slate.

The criminal has completed his jail sentence and has come out with a clean slate.
