是的,be(或其变化,如am, is, are, was, were)具有单独的实际含义,具有单独的实义动词(或称实意动词)的用法。
be [no obj] somewhat formal: to exist or live在;存在;生存
I think, therefore I am. (=exist)
Once upon a time there was (= lived) a knight.
There once was a man who dwelt alone in a small village.
all the things that are (= exist)
be(包括其变形am、are、is)既是不及物动词,又是助动词;
Wit bought to better than wit taught.
He has been to Shanghai twice.
——been是普通不及物动词,“has been to(介词)”的意思是“去过”。
There is no medicine against death.
The meeting was presided over by the principal.
