Ain’t No Sunshine这首歌的原创作者是Bill Withers，被收录在1971年9月发布的专辑《Just as I Am》中，成为了Bill Withers一个突破性的热曲。一经发售，立刻风靡整个流行乐界，在当时的Billboard Hot100上排行第3，并在四十年后仍旧影响着当今的歌手们。
当今似乎有很多人不知道这首歌，但这首歌在流行乐界的地位却是令人高山仰止。到目前为止，已有至少144个翻唱版本，还被翻译成各国语言，比如德国等。翻唱版本中，Lighthouse Family版本较为出名，而最为出名的演唱者Michael Jackson。还有数不清的电影电视采用这首歌作为原声带，如《诺丁山》、《Old School》、《Crooklyn》（种族情深）、《Munich》（慕尼黑，斯皮尔伯格执导）、《America Me》等。
Withers是在看了一部1962年的电影《Days of Wine and Roses》（醉乡情断）后被激发写出了这首歌的，特别是由 Lee Remick 和Jack Lemmon 饰演的两个角色。他说：“有时候，我们会怀念一些对我们并不是特别好的东西。总有一些东西在我大脑里来来回回萦绕，在看完这部电影之后。我想，可能也有一些类似的东西在我的生命中发生了，但我毫无知觉。”
这首歌被Rolling Stone选为有史以来最伟大的500首歌中的第285位，1972年获得了最佳R&B歌曲奖。
