高级词汇：stationary

《经济学人》2019年10月12日这一期，The 2019 Nobel prizes 这篇文章讲到2019年诺贝尔奖相关的内容。

在讲到宇宙物理学时，用到了stationary这个单词，今天我们就来深入学习一下。

Until the first decades of the 20th century, astronomers had assumed the universe to be stationary and eternal. This was shown to be incorrect in the 1920s, with the discovery that all galaxies are moving away from each other. In other words, the universe is expanding. Rewind the clock and this means that, at the start of time, now called the Big Bang, the universe would have been incredibly small, hot and dense.

【追根溯源】

单词stationary里的sta部分来源于拉丁语stare，表示“站”。所以，在英语单词里，很多包含sta/stat/stant的单词都跟“站，静止”有关系，例如：

stand /stænd/ v.站立

station /ˈsteɪʃn/ n.车站

static /ˈstætɪk/  adj.静止的；不变的

stable /ˈsteɪbl/ adj.稳定的；牢固的

constant /ˈkɒnstənt/ adj.不变的；恒定的

在美剧《生活大爆炸》S8E12中，Howard吐槽Rajesh的运动技能，就用到了stationary这个词：

Howard: The man who crashed his stationary bike.

Rajesh:  I didn't crash it, okay? My playlist was too up-tempo, I got light-headed and I fell off.
