Air-raid sirens will be heard in cities across China on September 18, 2016 to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the 'Mukden Incident.” In 1931, Japanese troops blew up a section of rail tracks near northeast China’s Shenyang city, and accused the Chinese army of being behind the explosion as an excuse to launch an attack. This incident, seen as a pretext for the Japanese invasion of northeastern China in 1931, remains etched in the minds of the Chinese people. Various memorial activities are held across the country each year to remember the incident.
