Today is the first day of Chinese traditional year, when almost all Chinese people go outside for paying a New Year call.

You will meet lots of relatives when greeting in the New Year. Seniority is regarded as important in Chinese traditional society. As a result, Appellations for relatives are very complicated.

For example, The elder brothers and the younger brothers in Chinese are called a joint name 'brother' in English. The elder sisters and the younger sisters of your mother or father are called a joint name 'aunt'. The elder sisters and the younger brothers of your mother or father are called a joint name 'uncle'.

Before greeting to an elder relative, you have to figure out which side of your parents he belongs to and whether he is older than that side.

Now I'll share some of my local appellations for relatives.

I wonder whether your local appellations are the same as mine.
