TheLondon Stock Exchange has always been famous as a place for menonly. Women used to be strictly forbidden to enter. But the worldis changing day by day, and even the Stock Exchange is graduallyopening its doors to the other sex. On 16th November, 1971, a greatdecision was taken. The Stock Exchange Council decided that womenshould be allowed onto the new trading floor when it opened in1973. But the first girls were neither allowed to become partnersin stock broking firms, nor to be authorized dealers in stocks andshares. They were simply junior clerks and telephoneoperators.

Womenhave been trying to get into the Stock Exchange for many years.Several votes have been taken in “the House” to see whether themembers would be willing to allow women to become members, but theanswer has always been “No”. Now women are admitted although ina very junior capacity. Two firms of jobbers made an application tothe Stock Exchange Council to be allowed to employ girl clerks.Permission was finally given. A member of the Stock Exchangeexplained after this news had been released, “The new floor isgoing to be different from the old one. All the jobbers will havetheir own stands, with space for telephones and typewriters.Therefore there will have to be typists and telephone operators. Sowomen must be allowed in.”  This decision didnot mean a very great victory in the war for equal rights forwomen. However, it was a step in the right direction. The chairmanof the Stock Exchange said, “I think that the opening of the newbuilding will eventually lead to women being allowed to have fullmembership of the Stock Exchange. It is only a matter oftime, it must happen.”
