Ordinary foodscontain specific vaccines. With the berries in their mouths, thekids head for the front door.

It' s time for you to go to work. Your car checks yourfingerprints and unlocks the doors. " My office. Autopilot," youcommand. WILD WEATHERMAN

      Name: Sam Champion

      Hot job: TV Weatherman

      Where: WABC-TV, New York City

When you were a child, did you plan to forecast wind, rain, andsnow on TV?

I wanted to be a foreign journalist. I took courses in weatherscience at Eastern Kentucky University, but I majored inbroadcasting news.

How did you finally become a weatherman?

My first job in the early 80’s was at the local TV station inPaducah, Kentucky. I did everything from turning on the lights inthe morning to writing and delivering morning news. I put togetherweather forecasts, and became interested in them.

Back then, how did you forecast weather?

Independent companies collected computer information thatshowed, for example, how a single weather system might split intosnow or snow mixed with rain. The information was often oppositeand the job of a weatherman was to study the information and makethe best educated guess about the storm.

Has weather forecasting changed much with newtechnology?

Advanced computers, satellites, and Doppler radar (sound wavesused to track storms) have made forecasting more exact. But westill know very little about how weather is shaped. So far, we justhave theories.

Any advice for children who’d like to become weatherscientists?

To me, weather is the most exciting field in the world. Thereare still so many more questions about weather than answers. Afterall, if we can’t foresee floods or hurricanes, how safe a societyare we? Weather forecasting is wide open for scientists who love tosolve puzzling problems. The next generation of meteorologists(weather scientists) will unlock many of Earth’s weather secrets. So get a general knowledge of Earth science, and study meteorology(weather science) in college.

Thanks, Sam.

“Few things help an individual more than to place responsibilityupon him,and let him know that you trust him.” These words are fromthe black American educator,Booker Washington. He was sayingthat,“If you want people to grow up,you have to stop treating themlike children.”
In America, families are closebut children are encouraged to be independent,to make their owndecisions, even at a very early age. It’s not unusual for a child ofseven to be given an allowance(津贴)every week. The child isencouraged to save some of the money but he or she can spend it onwhatever they choose, for example, buying clothes, school supplies orCDs. Some teenagers even have their own credit cards! That’s a bigresponsibility since even adults are tempted to overspend when theyhave credit cards. From an early age,American children are askedfor their opinions and they are included in family decision—making. At the dinner table, teenagers will be listened to on any topic, frompolitics to buying a new family car or where the family will go onvacation. In this way, teenagers are getting practice in becomingindividuals:they are learning how to stand on their own twofeet.
Many Chinese young people arebecoming almost as interested as American teens in searching forindependence. They want to express those qualities that make themunique human beings. You can see this in the way they dress, themusic they listen to and the friends they choose. “Super Girl” LiYuchun caught the imagination of Chinese teenagers on the “SuperGirl” television contest. She was not the traditional “nice, youngChinese girl”.With her short, spiky hair and boy—like clothes, shewas telling everyone that she was different. She had the courage tobe her own person and to stand on her own two feet...and shewon!
There is an oldsaying,“Everyone should carefully observe which way his heart drawshim and then choose that way with all his strength.” If you dothis, step by step, over a period of time, you may find that you havebecome the person you always wanted to be.
