A
My family moved from Taiwan to a small town in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had justlearned English, and from what little I could gather from myclassmates, Santa Claus would come down one’s chimney and put toysin one’s stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, Ithought. After I looked up “stocking” in my Chinese-Englishdictionary, I knew what I had to do.
On that fateful night, after everyone went to bed, I took mylongest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already onthe mantel(壁炉). Obviously, the previous owners of this house wereno strangers to this Santa character.
I woke up before everyone else on Christmas Day and ran to thefireplace. To make a sob story short, I was hit with the reality ofan empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I burst into tears, quickly took down the sock, and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.Santa was dead.
Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories wouldunavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with mypoor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, orelse I would cry.
How could I know that Santa was just late? Nine years ago, onChristmas Eve, an older man with a white beard and a red capknocked on my front door. He said, “I’ve been looking for you fortwenty-five years.” He handed me a bulging red stocking, winked, and left. On top of the stocking was a card. It read: “For Becky—Imay have missed you in the second grade, but you’ve always lived inmy heart. Santa.”
Through tear-blurred eyes, I recognized the handwriting of Jill,a friend I had met just two months before. I later discovered thatthe older man was her father. Jill had seen the hurt little girlunderneath the thirty-something woman and decided to do somethingabout it.
So now I believe that Santa is real. I don’t mean thetwinkle-eyed character of children’s mythology or the creation ofAmerican holiday marketers. Those Santas annoy and sadden me. Ibelieve in the Santa Claus that live inside good and thoughtfulpeople. This Santa does not return to the North Pole after a crazydelivery but lives each day purposefully, really listens tofriends, and then plans deliberate acts of kindness.

A recent survey in the United States showed that the averagefamily spent more money on its pets than on its children. Althoughrather shocking, it should not surprise anyone who has seen thedoggy parlors( 客厅 ) where loved pets rest. Are Americans unique intreating their little friends in this way? No, the English, too,pay more attention to their pets.
This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which oftencontain more vitamins than human food. They certainly cost much.Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds onpet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animalfurniture. It is difficult not to feel angry about this whenconsidering what the same amount could do for victims of starvationand poverty, so it is not unusual for me to get hot undercollar when I read an old man left all his money to his doginstead of his children.
There are a variety of reasons why I find pets-raising alarming. They cause physical problems. An example of this is New York wherethey have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leaveon the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number oflarge cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too.It is the threat of rabies — a disease with no known cure.
Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. Most littlechildren want a dog or a cat, and they continually push theirmothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the "sweetlittle thing" has been brought home that the parents realize howmuch time and money must be spent on "Rover" or "Bonzo". Then theyjust abandon it. As a result, they are allowed to run free. Englishfarmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someone's pet andyou must have read of children being hurt by some pets of theirown.
Lastly, I would only suggest that we have got our prioritieswrong and that something should be done about it. In my view, it'stime we stopped being sentimental about pets. I can see no reasonwhy we should get upset when animals are cut up for medicalexperiments. This will lead us to discovering cures for serioushuman diseases, then I say, “keep cutting!”

Man still has a lot to learn about the most powerful and complexpart of his body — the brain.
It may be surprising to learn that it isn't age that makes youlose your memory. The reason could be that you have a "lazy"memory, not an old one. Like your body your memory improves withexercise. Once given plenty of exercise, the brain keeps its power. Before discussing how to improve the memory, let's look at how thebrain works. There are two sides to the brain, the left and theright. The right side deals with the senses (what we see, hear, feel and smell). It's the creative and imaginative side. The leftside is concerned with logic. It analyzes information and puts itin order.
Some recent research suggests that we remember everything thathappens to us. The problem most of us has is recalling events. Mostforgetting takes place immediately after learning. An hour afterlearning something new, more than 50% has been forgotten. After amonth, 80% has been forgotten, and so on.
This shows revision is very important. If you revise newmaterial you have learnt, you remember much more. So it's of vitalimportance to revise newly learned material often, and havefrequent breaks. We best remember what we learn at the beginning ofa learning period and at the point where we stop. After the break, revise what was learned before the break and then continue learningthe new material. These breaks should happen every 20 or 45minutes.
Other experiments have shown the brain needs time to "digest"what has been learned. The time necessary for this is 5 to 10minutes. After the break, the memory will have absorbed what it hasjust learned, and more will be remembered. During this period it isimportant to exercise the right side of the brain, because the leftside is used during the learning period. Therefore you shouldrelax. Listening to music, breathing in fresh air, and looking at apicture are all ways of using the other side of the brain. So whenyou are studying alone, make a plan which shows when to have breaksand to revise newly learned material immediately before you beginstudying again. If you do in this way, your memory willimprove.
12. According to the text, you lose your memory by ___.
A. getting too old B. hardly using your brain
C. working too hard D. using your brain too much
4
13.
To fight forgetting effectively, we're advised to ___.
A. go back to what was learned regularly
B. break down materials into small pieces
C. focus on both ends of a learning period
D. take breaks to give the brain a good rest
14.
During the learning process the brain need breaks to ___.
A. use the right side of the brain
B. revise newly learnt materials
C. take in what has been learnt
D. relax the left side of the brain
15.
Where is this text most probably taken from?
A. Science fictions. B. Students' literature. C. Anadvertisement. D. A science report.
