School life in the UK
Going to a British high school for oneyear(1)was a very enjoyable and excitingexperience(2)or me. I was very happy with(3)the school hours in Britain because school starts(4)around 9 a.m. andends(6)about 3:30 p.m. This means(6)I could get up an hour later than usual(7)as schools in China begin before 8 a.m.
On(8)the firstday, all students went to attend (9) assembly. Isat next to a girl whose name was Diane. We soon became best friends. Duringassembly, the headmaster told us about the rules of the school. He also told usthat the best way to (10) earn respect(11)from theschool was to work hard and achieve(12)high grades. This sounded like (13)my school in China.
I had many teachers in the past year andthey each taught only one subject. Mr. Heywood was my class teacher. My favoriteteacher was Miss Burke. She was the teacher who taught us English Literature. In our class there were 29 students. This is about the average (14) size forBritish schools. We had to move to different classrooms for different classes. We also had different students in some classes, so it (15) was difficult toremember all the faces and names.
I found the homework was not as heavy aswhat (16) I used to (17)get in my old school, but it was a bit (18) challenging(19) for me at first because all the homework was in English. I felt lucky asall my teachers were very helpful and I enjoyed all my subjects: English,History, English Literature, Computer Science, Maths, Science, PE, Art, Cookingand French.
My English improved (20) a lot as I usedEnglish every day and spend (21)an hour each day reading English books in thelibrary. I usually wet to the Computer Club at lunchtime, so I could e-mail myfamily and friends back home for free. I also had an extra (22) French class onTuesday evenings. Cooking was really fun as I learned how to (23) buy, prepare(24) and cook food. At the end of term we held a class party and we all had tocook something. I was glad that all my classmates enjoyed the cake that I made.
Students at school have to study Maths,English and Science, but can drop (25) some subjects if they don’t like them, for example (26) , History, French and Art. They can choose  other subjects like Woodwork, ComputerScience or Languages such as Spanish and German. In Woodwork class I made asmall table. Though (27) it didn’t look like a table when it was finished, Istill liked it very much.
I missed(28) Chinese food a lot atlunchtime. British food is very different. British people eat a lot of dessertsafter their main meal. After lunch, we usually played on the school field.Sometimes (29) I played football with the boys. Sometimes I just relaxed undera tree or sat on the glass.
I was very lucky to experience thisdifferent way of life. And I really hope (30) that someday I can go back andstudy in Manchesteragain.
Project Starting a new school club
We have a radioclub in our school. It is great because it is run (1) by the students for theschool. I am lucky as I am one of the hosts.
Itwas started two years ago as CD players were not allowed (2) in school. Oneday, I just began thinking about music for everyone, so I asked the headmasterif music could be played during break time. He approved (3) the idea, and twoyears later I am the oldest student member of the radio club.
Ourclub is much more than just music. Every morning we tell students about theweather and recent news, plus some special messages that the teachers want usto broadcast.
During exam time we have a special programme that tells the students thethings they should or shouldn’t do for preparation. At the end of the schoolyear, many students who are graduating use our club to give messages to theirclose friends and teachers.
When parents come to visit the school and talk to the teachers in theevening, we always play songs sung by students, and we also give specialmessages to inform the parents of events such as outing and school plays.
Iam graduating soon, I shall miss the radio club, but I know that it willcontinue without me. (Kate Jones)
Ourschool club ‘Poets of the Next Generation’ was started by our English teacherMr Owen. We meet on the last Friday of every month to talk about poems andpoets that we like. When we meet, we first select (4) poems that we love, andthen read them out loud. We do this in a group and listen to each other talkingabout poems in our group meetings.
When Iattended the first meeting, I was required (5) to write a poem and I have toread it out to the group. It was a little scary at first, but everyone was sonice and friendly that (6) I soon stopped worrying. I once read a poem aboutnature in our school garden. I choose an old tree and circled everyone aroundit before I read. The group said it was one of the best poems they had heard. (Bob Shaw)

Mom and Dad arriveback from vacation a day earlier than expected. The curtains are closed and theliving room is dark when Morn and Dad enter.

Eric: Mom! Dad! You're back early! (lookingaround room, sounding frightened ) But, but ...you weren't supposed to come home until tomorrow!
The dogslowly walks to Mom and Dad.

Dad:  And look at this room--trash all over theplace! Where is your brother? (shoutingangrily) Daniel!
Daniel:  (runninginto room) Morn, Dad, I can explain ...

Morn and Dad bothturn towards Daniel.
Dad: (sounding very angry) Listen to me young man--remember the day whenwe left you in charge? We thought you could act likean adult! I don't know thereason why the house is so dirty ...
Morn:   Daniel, we thought you were an adult, aperson from whom we could expect good decisions ...

Dad:  Whom we could trust! This is not a familywhere bad behavior goes unpunished and you ...
Daniel:  (shouting)Stop shouting at me. I'm still a teenager! Why is everything always myfault?
Daniel runs into hisbedroom and slams the door: Morn and Dad look at each other as lights go out.

Daniel:  They never even gave me a chance to explain,i hate them!
Eric:  You don't hate them. I can tell them whathappened. Then they won't be mad anymore.
Daniel:  No, don't tell them anything. They didn'ttrust me. They don't deserve to know the truth. Let them think what they want.
Eric:  But Daniel, if they knew that Spot was illand we used the money to take him to the vet ...
Daniel:  And that we spent all of yesterday waitingthere for him and that is why we had no time to clean the house ... but noEric, why didn't they ask me what happened instead of shouting at me?
Act two, scene two
Mom:  Do you think we were too hard on Daniel?Perhaps something happened ... maybe we should go and ask him.
Dad:  Maybe, but now that he has been so rude tous, I feel like we have to punish him or he won'trespect us.
Mom:  Oh, why does this have to be so difficult?

Project Writing an advice letter
Manypeople in families become upset with each other over small problems. Smallproblems can become big ones, however, if they are not discussed and dealt withearly on. What would you do if you were an advice columnist and received thefollowing letters?
Dear Mr. Zhu,
I am Writing to your magazine's 'Teenagers Now'column to ask for some help with my16-year-old son. At the moment, he refusesto do almost everything his mother and I ask him to do. He is our only childand we treat him very well. His grandparents buy him many things, and yet he isstill rude to us. He refuses to spend time with us or do as we tell him.Sometimes he acts as though he doesn't even love us at all.
Recently he has been refusing to do hishomework, and instead insists on wasting his time watching DVDs and listeningto foreign music. I cannot understand this music, but I don't like it. He alsospends too much time in Internet cafes, where he either plays games or chatsonline. He is wasting valuable time during this important period in his life!
What am I to do? At present, to prevent upsettinghis mother with an argument, I am allowing him his freedom. However, I amworried that if I keep allowing him to do what he wants, he may fail at school,or worse.
How can I help my son without harming ourrelationship?
Yourssincerely,
Zhenhua

Dear Mr. Zhu,
I read your magazine every month and I love your'Teenagers Now' column. I myself am a teenager, almost 17, and have someproblems at home that I hope you can help me with.
Mainly, the problem is my father. Whenever Iwant to do something or suggest an idea, such as a restaurant we can go to fordinner, he doesn't listen to me. Whenever I try to talk to him he just shoutsat me. When I refuse to listen to him, he shouts at me and the two of us fightlike crazy.
He and my mother always make me do things Idon't like such as playing the piano and learning Japanese. Then, when I havesome spare time and want to be alone, they call me selfish and unloving!
My father gets very angry when I play foreignmusic. Also, every time I watch a DVD he sends me to bed or tells me to spendmore time studying. He has even forbidden me from meeting my friends online atthe Internet oafs!
I love him a lot, but I don't understand why he will notrespect the things I want to do. He was once a teenager--he should understandme better than he does.
Yours truly,
Liu We/

Please give me a hand.
2. Foot the bill.
3. It goes in one ear and out the other.
4. Play by ear.
I haven't had a chance to prepare any notes so all I can do is start talkingand play it by ear.

Dear Zhou Ling,
Things change so quickly!l’m now in hospital recovering from liver failure. I regret taking thoseweight-loss pills. They contain a harmful chemical that caused my liver to fail. The doctor told me that 1 would dieif I couldn't get a new liver. My mother is too old for such a long operation.I thought I was going to die.
Then the doctor found thatsomeone in your country, whose name is Li Dong, was an exact match for me.he donated more than half of hisliver to save my life.I was very lucky, wasn't I?
I’m feeling better now.I follow my doctor's advice andexercise for at least half an hour every day (but I seldom go t0 the gym!), andeat lots of fruit and vegetables. People should look after their bodies. My mother is right:don't damage your health for a slim and attractive figure. It isn't worth it.We shouldn't be ashamed of the waywe look, should we?
I hope to hear from yousoon.
Love,
Amy

Dear Amy,
My computer was broken soI couldn't read your two e-mails until today.I'm so sorry to hear about your problems. But I’m glad you'refeeling better and are recovering.I'm amazed that in Chinasomeone's liver matched yours! This is really a touching story --- a strangerwho donald part of his liver to a girl he doesn't even know !
You're right. We shouldn'tbe embarrassed about our weight.I think you look great as you are,and you're a wonderful person.I know that the pressure to stay slim is a problem, especially foran actress. However, your mother knows best:nothing is more important thanhealth.
It's the same in China---manypeople, some of whom are not overweight at all,are always going on diets or taking weight-loss pills, which are often dangerous I hope theycan learn from your story.
Love,
Zhou Ling
