在西蒙斯涉猎广泛的艺术实践中，种族、社会与文化政治是他始终坚持的主题，并继续占据着他最近标志性的系列作品“抹擦绘画”。西蒙斯自其早期职业生涯开始，就以“抹擦行动”为手段，拷问美国国内的种族身份与种族压迫。这些超大尺寸的新作刻画了银幕上众多的非裔美国电影明星，旁边注明了他们参演无声影片及早期有声电影的片名。作品如影院银幕般高高俯瞰观众，每一件都用灰颜料一遍又一遍长时间涂抹，令人联想到一块擦得干干净净的黑板。画面中央用白颜料写着常遭遗忘的黑人电影演员的姓名，在灯光下鲜明刺眼，而影片名则被抹擦地节节后退，融入背景，几近湮灭无踪。
