LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - This weekend's winter storm was the first winter storm since Lexington city leaders unveiled a new snow plan.
After last winter, the city invested more money in the streets and roads budget and created an option to hire contractors to help roads.
Based on the amount of the snow that falls, the streets and roads department in Fayette County has different levels on how they will respond.
Once the snowfall hits eight inches, the highest level of service goes into effect.
The biggest change compared to last year's snow plan was that the city allotted more money in its budget to bring in more contractors to help treat and plow the roads.
That change this year let crews clear main roads and neighborhood roads faster.
LFUCG Streets and Roads Deputy Director Rob Allen told WKYT's Monique Blair that they were also able to respond to requests for help or service in a different format this year.
"LexCall came in and staffed 24 hours around the clock for the first time. We had a social media presence this year that we've not had before," LFUCG Streets and Roads Deputy Director Rob Allen said.
The snow plan is designed that once the snow stops it should be complete within 24 hours, but crews worked quicker than that deadline.
Allen said there are some improvements he'd like to see made to the snow plan in the future.
"We need to continue to fine tune our communications plan. It worked really well, but we got a lot of duplicate service requests. Hopefully in the future, we’ll be able to incorporate things like GPA and automatic mapping that will not only help us, but will help the public either plan their routes or see what we’ve done. The administration really places a value on transparency," Allen said.
The mayor's office told WKYT it could take awhile before the data is released in regards to how much the storm cost the taxpayers.
