I visited China four years ago as an immature 16 year-old American.

Before I went over, I didn’t ever really think about China. It was on the other side of the world. They were Communists. They had a lot of people and pollution. Looking back today, it seems so naive to have been so ignorant of the largest nation of the world. I guess it’s a common American problem, though that’s no excuse.

On the plane ride over, I sat next to a Chinese man. It came up that I was a Christian. He said he was too. Eye opener. There are religious people in China.

In Shanghai, I climbed the World Financial Center and looked down at the largest city on the planet from over 1500 feet up. I was amazed. Later that day I traveled to a market in one of the poorer districts of the city, and I was amazed in a different way.

I traveled to Wuhan on an overnight train. It felt like it took forever for us to get there, and I imagined we must be halfway across the country. Not even close. China is huge.

Wuhan is a major industrial city, and it’s definitely not a major tourist destination. Pollution was pretty bad while I was there. But after a week or so in Wuhan, we traveled to Hangzhou, which is known for the beautiful West Lake. It was like night and day of difference- in Hangzhou, people followed traffic laws, facilities were kept up, and the city felt like it was full of life.

That was another eye opener- China is like any other large country. It has its winners and its losers, its beautiful parts and its utilitarian parts. Some people live hard lives of work in factories. Others run businesses and live in beautiful penthouses.

Finally, we visited a smallish city (by Chinese standards) called Wenling, where I stayed with a Chinese family and played bootlegged Fifa 13 with a kid my age. I went to school with him and saw students drilling for the national exam. I saw English teachers trying to teach a language they themselves weren’t fluent in to try and help the kids get a good job. I met a girl who said that she wished she could go to America, because in China she wasn’t allowed to be left-handed (I assume this was a family pressure issue).

Throughout China, I met incredibly kind people, rude people, young people, old people, people with dreams of a wife and a car, people just trying to get by.

And what I realized is that China is like the United States. It’s a complicated place. It’s full of contradictions and juxtapositions. But like the United States, and like every country that I’ve been to, really, it’s an amazing place with wonderful people to meet and beautiful places to explore.

So when I came back to the United States, I started reading about China. I started taking Chinese classes and classes about the history of China. And the more I’ve learned, the more I've realized how impossible it will ever be for me to get a handle on China and really understand it. After all, you can spend your whole life trying to understand one person, let alone 1.4 billion.

And my trip to China made me realize how silly all of our government disagreements and problems are. Let’s build friendships instead of driving our destroyers through the South China Sea. Let’s work together to make the world a safer place. Let’s learn about China and Asia and let the most populous continent in the world have a bigger say in world culture and leadership. Otherwise I guarantee our ignorance will hurt us.
