这首诗作于1933年，起源于狄兰·托马斯和他的朋友Bert Trick玩的游戏，他们两人都以“不朽”为主题来各做一首诗，Bert Trick的诗第二年在报纸上发表了，标题是《For death is not the end死亡不是终结》，而狄兰·托马斯以这个主题写的诗则名为《And death shall have no dominion死亡无法掌控一切》，当年5月就发表于《新英国周刊》。1936年10月，狄兰·托马斯发表了自己的首部诗集，其中就包括这首《死亡无法掌控一切》。
这首诗在很多电影中都被引用，例如：《美女与野兽》，《绝地杀机》，《未了阴阳情》，《水的重量》。还曾被Brave Saint Saturn改编为歌曲，收录于专辑《Brave Saint Saturn》中。
诗本身的意象，是描述的即便肉身被折磨致死，而灵魂是永恒的，并且仍会复活，所以死亡无法掌控人的意志，在第一段诗中使用的“西风冷月中的那个人”，指的就是死而复生的基督，对身体的折磨部分也是用的基督双手被钉上十字架，肉身受难的故事。
