今天的文章还是要从一个同学的问题说起:
我们把截图中的句子敲出来分析一下,里面涉及到一个关键表达:
Last year, at the UN, China cited this a big achievement of its efforts in the five past years to improve the lot of women.
译:去年,在联合国,中国引述了这个在过去五年中改善妇女境况的重大成果。
请注意“lot”这个词。
很多人看到这个词的第一反应就是“很多、大量”,比如 a lot of people(很多人)。
但看清楚,此处 lot 前是 the,the lot of…就未必是“很多”了。
the lot of 一般有两个含义:
1. 表示“全部”,相当于 the whole
例:
① Get out of my house, the lot of you.
译:你们全部从我家滚出去。
② Thatʼs the lot.
译:这就是全部的量了。
2.表示“境况、处境、命运”,相当于 destiny
例:
① She was feeling dissatisfied with her lot.
译:她不满意现在的境况。
② The lot of homeless people in this city has been improved.
译:城市里流浪者的处境已得到改善。
再回到一开始的句子:
“to improve the lot of women”,很明显,表示“改善女性的处境”。
看到这里,有同学可能会问,为啥 lot 可以表示“处境”或“命运”?
lot其实罪原始的含义是“(抽的)签”:
在 draw lots(抽签)、by lot(通过抽签的方式)等现代英语短语中,依然能看到 lot 的本意,来看例句:
① They drew lots for the right to go first.
译:他们抽签来决定谁先来。
② In Athens at that time, judges were chosen by lot.
译:在那时的雅典,法官是通过抓阄来选定的。
③ The lot fell on me to pay the bill.
译:我抽到签,所以由我来买单。
所以 lot 表示“命运”,正是从“抽签”这层含义中引申出来的。
另外,我们所熟知的 lot 的这些含义,其实都是从“抽签”衍生出来的:
1)“份额”
a lot 还可表示一个“签”所代表的“那一份”,例如“That's your lot”表示“这是你那份”。
2)“大量”
由于人们总是希望自己的那一份足够大,所以 a lot 就衍生出了“大量”之意。
3)“乐透彩”
讲完 lot 的含义,是不是觉得 Lotto(乐透彩)这个词很眼熟了?没错,Lotto 就是从 lot(抽签)衍生出来的。
4)“一块场地”
当年美国的欧洲殖民者分配新获得的土地时,也往往采取 draw lots 的抽签方式,所以lot 还衍生出“一块地”的含义,如 parking lot(停车场)还保留这层含义。
