人脑是人体中最复杂的器官之一。对脑内细胞所形成的神经网络的研究是神经生物学家们揭开学习、记忆等等人类行为的重要基础。但是由于神经网络的复杂性以及对于完整胚胎大脑进行电生理学等方面的直接研究涉及到伦理问题,科学界对于一个优良的体外研究模型的需求呼之欲出。人体中复杂的动态神经网络在发育的早期就已经出现,但是神经网络最初的塑造与发展是在产前还是在其后的发育过程中逐渐建立起来的还很不清楚。为了对神经网络早期的建立过程进行研究并提供良好的模型系统,近日,加州大学圣地亚哥分校Alysson R. Muotri研究组在Cell Stem Cell杂志上发表了题为“Complex Oscillatory Waves Emerging from CorticalOrganoids Model Early Human Brain Network Development”的文章,使用皮层类器官对人类大脑进行研究,从而提供了一个能够模拟早期胚胎电生理以及神经网络建立的类器官模型。
