B

About fiveweeks ago, I noticed the skin of our pet lizard (蜥蜴)was growing dusty. It worried me. I reportedthe strange surface on the skin of the lizard to my husband and children thenext morning. Seconds later, our lizard emerged from its tank with its old skinflowing behind it.

I didn’tthink about it much until a morning last week when I knocked my favorite teapotoff the table. It burst into hundreds of pieces. As I swept up the mess, I wondered whywe had been breaking so many things over the months.

The destruction started three months ago. Itwas my husband’s birthday. He had just lost his job. The uncertainty wasstarting to wear on us, so I wanted to do something special.

“Let’s make a cake for Dad!” I cried.

My kids screamed with joy. We baked, icedand sprinkled for most of the day. Candles on the cake! Balloons on the walls!Flowers on the table!

Two hours before my husband came back homefrom another job interview, my daughter climbed up to grab a glass vase from ahigh shelf. It fell and crashed beside the cake. Tiny pieces of glass wereeverywhere. She sobbed loudly as I threw the cake away. My husband had bananapudding for his birthday.

Three days ago, the light in our living roomsuddenly went out. After several frustrating hours of unsuccessful attempts tofix it, my husband suggested watching the Michael Jordan documentary (纪录片)series The Last Dance.

The poignancy (酸楚)of Jordan retiring from hisbeloved basketball to play baseball and what had pushed him to make such a toughdecision took me by surprise. As I watched him take off his basketball uniformand replace it with a baseball uniform, I saw him leaving behind thelayer that no longer served him, just as our lizard had. Neither ofthem chose the moment that had transformed them. But they had to live with whothey were after everything was different. Just like us. I realized that we haveto learn to leave the past behind.

Humans do not shed skin (蜕皮)as easily as other animals. The beginning ofchange is upsetting. The process is tiring. Damage changes us before we areready. I see our lizard, raw and nearly new.

Jordan said that no matter how it ends, itstarts with hope. With our tender, hopeful skin, that is where we begin.

A trial project by the Montreal Children’sHospital suggested that the use of medical hypnosis (催眠)can reduce pain and anxiety in patients. Theproject also resulted in a reduction in the amount of medicines used to performmedical-imaging (医学影像)procedures.

“During the examination children don’t move.It works perfectly. It’s amazing,” said Johanne L’Ecuyer, a medical-imaging technologist atthe hospital.

The project was inspired by a French teamfrom Rouen University Hospital Centre where examinations are done underhypnosis instead of general anesthesia (麻醉).

A French medical-imaging technologist — also a hypnotist — was invited to train a few members in themedical-imaging department of the children’s hospital. In all, 80 examinationswere conducted for the project between January and September, 2019, focusing onthe imaging procedures that would cause anxiety.

Hypnosis is not a state of sleep: It israther a modified (改变的)state of consciousness. The technologistwill guide the patient to this modified state—an imaginary world that willdisassociate itself more and more from the procedure that follows.

“The technologist must build up a story withthe patient,” Ms. L’Ecuyer said. “The patient is left with the power to choosewhat he wants to talk about. Do you play sports? Do you like going to thebeach? We establish a subject that we will discuss throughout the procedure.”

Everything that happens next during theprocedure must be related to this story — an injection (注射)becomes the bite of an insect; the heat onthe skin becomes the sensation of the sun and a machine that rings becomes apolice car passing nearby.

“The important thing is that thetechnologist associates what is happening outside the patient’s body with whatthe patient sees in his head,” Ms. L’Ecuyer said. “It requires creativity onthe part of the technologist, imagination, a lot of patience and kindness.”

The procedure appealed to the staff a lotwhen it was introduced in January. It spread like wildfire thatsomeone from France was here to train the technologists,”Ms. L’Ecuyer said. She added thatshe had a line of staff at her door wanting to take the training.

45. One of the results produced by the trialproject is                  .

A. a better understanding ofchildren

B. less use of certain medicines

C. new medical-imaging technology

D. an improved reputation of thehospital

46. The French technologist came to thechildren’s hospital to                  .

A. assist in treating a patient           B. carry out hypnosis training

There is something to be said for being ageneralist, even if you are a specialist. Knowing a little about a lot of thingsthat interest you can add to the richness of a whole, well-lived life.

Society pushes us to specialize, to becomeexperts. This requires commitment to a particular occupation, branch of studyor research. The drawback to being specialists is we often come to know moreand more about less and less. There is a great deal of pressure to master one'sfield. You may pursue training, degrees, or increasing levels of responsibilityat work. Then you discover the pressure of having to keep up.

Some people seem willing to work around theclock in their narrow specialty. But such commitment can also weaken a sense offreedom. These specialists could work at the office until ten each night, thenlook back and realize they would have loved to have gone home and enjoyed thesweetness of their family and friends, or traveled to exciting places, meetinginteresting people. Mastering one thing to the exclusion (排除)of others can hold back your true spirit.

Generalists, on the other hand, know a lotabout a wide range of subjects and view the whole with all its connections. They are people of ability, talent, and enthusiasm who can bring their broadperspective (视角)into specific fields of expertise (专长). The doctor who is also a poet andphilosopher is a superior doctor, one who can give so much more to his patientsthan just good medical skills.

Things are connected. Let your expertise inone field fuel your passions in all related areas. Some of your interests maynot appear to be connected but, once you explore their depths, you discoverthat they are. My editor Toni, who is also a writer, has edited several historybooks. She has decided to study Chinese history. Fascinated by the structuralbeauty of the Forbidden City as a painter, she is equally interested to learnmore about Chinese philosophy. “I don’t know where it will lead, but I’mexcited I’m on this pursuit.”

These expansions into new worlds help us bygiving us new perspectives. We begin to see the interconnectedness of one thingto another in all aspects of our life, of ourselves and the universe. Developbroad, general knowledge and experience. The universe is all yours to exploreand enjoy.

51. To become a specialist, one may have to______.

A. narrow his range of knowledge

B. avoid responsibilities at work

C. know more about the society

D. broaden his perspective onlife

52. The specialists mentioned in Paragraph 3tend to ______.

A. treasure their freedom

B. travel around the world

C. spend most time working

D. enjoy meeting funny people

53. According to the author, a superiordoctor is one who ______.

A. is fully aware of his talentand ability

B. is a pure specialist inmedicine

C. should love poetry andphilosophy

D. brings knowledge of otherfields to work

54. What does the author intend to show withthe example of Toni?

A. Passion alone does not ensurea person’s success.

B. In-depth exploration makesdiscoveries possible.

C. Everyone has a chance tosucceed in their pursuit.

D. Seemingly unrelated interestsare in a way connected.

55. What could be the best title for thepassage?

A. Be More a Generalist Than aSpecialist

B. Specialist or Generalist: Hardto Decide

C. Turn a Generalist into a Specialist

D. Ways to Become a Generalist

语篇类型:议论文;主题语境:人与社会之社会生活。

[语篇解读]专家和多面手各有利弊,多面手更有利于人们的生活和发展。

51. A。间接信息题。根据第二段中的“The drawback to being specialists iswe often come to know more and more about less and less”可知,做专家的缺点是我们常常对越来越少的知识了解得越来越多,即缩小知识面。故A项正确。

52. C。写作手法题。根据第三段中的“Some people seem willing to workaround the clock in their narrow specialty ... These specialists could work atthe office until ten each night”可知,这些专家似乎愿意在自己狭窄的专业领域夜以继日地工作,每天晚上在办公室工作到十点,所以专家往往会“花费大部分时间工作”,故C项正确。

53. D。间接信息题。根据第四段中的“The doctor… who can give so much moreto his patients than just good medical skills”可知,这位优秀的医生既是诗人又是哲学家,能够给病人更多的东西,而不仅仅是良好的医学技术。即优秀的医生能把其他领域的知识带到工作中,故D项正确。

54. D。归纳判断题。根据第五段第三句Some of your interests may not appearto be connected but, once you explore their depths, you discover that they are(你的一些兴趣似乎没有联系,但一旦你探索了它们的深度,你就会发现它们是联系在一起的)可知,作者使用Toni的例子是为了说明“似乎没有关联的兴趣以一种方式联系着”。故D项正确。

55. A。标题判断题。文章首段第二句点明成为多面手的好处,二、三、四、五段分别介绍了专家和多面手的特点,最后一段表明我们应该拓展广博的知识和经验,应该成为多面手,故A项正确。
