Dialogue

1

Jingjing:  Mark, thanks for meeting me outside again.  Can you bear this hot weather?

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  Mostly.  But I broke a sweat coming here to meet you on time.

Jingjing:  You could've just texted me that you'd be a few minutes late.  I would've waited.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  Nah, I ran to catch the bus, and then walked briskly here from the stop.  I just need to go rinse my face.

Jingjing:  The washroom's right over there.  I'll wait for you a little ways past it.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  OK, I'll be over in a sec.  ….   Wow, there was a funny sign in there.  It said, “wash after relief”.

Jingjing:  I think it just means people should wash their hands after using the toilet, you know, to prevent the spread of disease.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  In Chinese, the first two of five characters are 便后biànhòu.  The sign should say something like wash hands after using toilet.

Jingjing:  That doesn't sound like good grammar.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  It doesn't have to be, for a sign.  Just take the sentence you want to say—please wash your hands after using the toilet—and remove a few of the obvious words.

只要把你想说的句子——please wash your hands after using the toilet——去掉几个明显的字。

Jingjing:  Why not wash hands after toilet?

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  Too short.  That might get visitors thinking that managers want them to wash the toilet, then their hands.  Ha ha.

Jingjing:  Speaking of odd signs, there's one right there: “no naked flames”.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  I've seen that one at so many parks, I've gotten used to it.

Jingjing:  Doesn't naked make you think of a person without any clothes on?

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  That's pretty much the only meaning of naked, since we don't use it for animals.  But we also say you can see something with the naked eye to mean you don't need a telescope or a microscope.

Jingjing:  Hmm.  What word would you use instead of naked?

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: Open: No open fires.  I know someone with a match or a lighter might not think they're breaking the rules.  But that's what signs say in English where I come from and that's what park workers can point to if anyone's breaking the rules.  No open flames would be OK too, I guess.

Jingjing:  Hmm, so many things to keep in mind when writing a sign.

Jingjing

New words :

break a sweat:

work, run, or do other physical activity that causes you to start sweating

<do something> briskly:

do something quickly, efficiently, carefully enough

Jingjing:  What about this one: do not lie down.  That's short enough, isn't it?  And it doesn't have any grammar problems.

京晶:这个标语怎么样: do not lie down (请勿躺卧)。

jingjing

Mark

Mark:  It's alright.  No loitering is what signs like that usually say.

Jingjing:  This one's my favorite: the grass is smiling at you, please detour.

京晶:这条我很喜欢: the grass is smiling at you, please detour (小草微微笑,请你绕绕道)。

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  Ha ha.  I like that one too.  In a cartoon world, it'd probably be suitable.  Hmm.

Jingjing:  What about be kind to the grass, stay on the path?

京晶:那be kind to the grass, stay on the path(请勿踩踏草坪)这么说怎么样?

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  That'd be perfect.

Jingjing:  Hey, there's one more I wanted to ask you about: slip carefully.  I've seen different versions of that.  What should it say?

京晶:嘿,还有一个我想问你的: slip carefully(慢慢地滑倒)。

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  Caution, slippery.  That's a hard one to guess.  Most of the wrong ones seem to suggest that someone should slip and ought to just do it with care.

马克:应该是Caution, slippery(小心,地面滑)。

Jingjing:  Uh huh.  I don't know how someone could carefully slip.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  Wanna see me do it?  Just give me a banana peel or a few marbles.

Jingjing:  I don't have either of those with me.  I'll take a rain check.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  OK.  I'll be ready to slip with care anytime.  Oh, that reminds me: I saw one that said watch out for slippy.

Jingjing:  Who's Slippy?  That sounds like a naughty cartoon character.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark:  Yeah, I've been looking over my shoulder for him ever since seeing that sign.  Slippy could be anywhere.

New words :

loitering:

idling; standing, sitting or lying inappropriately in a public place

detour:

a way around a main route

take a rain check:

plan to ask for a favor later (one that is offered now)

look over <one's>

shoulder for <someone>:

pay attention, expect to see someone anytime, avoid being taken by surprise

“take a rain check”

Look over one’s shoulder
