大明皇帝朱棣在得取帝位后，决定迁都北京，即开始营造紫禁城(故宫)宫殿，至明永乐十八年（1420年）落成。依照中国古代星象学说位于中天，乃天帝所居，天人对应， 是以皇帝的居所又称紫禁城。总体布局为中轴对称，布局严谨，秩序井然，寸士片瓦皆遵循着等级礼制，映现出帝王至高无上的权威。
故宫占地72万平方米，建筑面积约15万平方米，共有殿宇8707间，都是砖木结构、黄琉璃瓦顶、青白石底座饰以金碧辉煌的彩绘，是世界上现存规模最大、最完整的古代皇家高级建筑群。
故宫被誉为世界五大宫之一（北京故宫、法国凡尔赛宫、英国白金汉宫、美国白宫、俄罗斯克里姆林宫），并被联合国科教文组织列为“世界文化遗产”。
