1. I remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when I helped him and my niece attend to all the sad chores that follow an unexpected death.
that followed 和 when I helped him...an unexpected death是双重关系分句，修饰先行词the days.
e.g.
    She’s the only girl I know who can play the piano. 
    她是我认识的唯一会弹钢琴的女孩。
还有一种双重关系分句，两个关系分句由并列连词连接：
e.g.
    We try our best to offer our guests unforgettable hours and days which they    really enjoy and which they will always remember.
    我们努力给客人提供难忘的时光，让他们觉得这段时间非常开心，难以忘怀。
联想：the following days, the days that follow, thedays to come“随后的日子”
attend to: to deal with somebody or something
“处理，对付某人或某事”
e.g.
    The doctor attended to the other patient before he got to my mother.
    医生料理完另一个病人后才来给我妈看病。
注意本句中时态的变化，remember，help和第一个follow使用了过去时，是指当时作者在处理姐姐丧事时的行动和情况，而第二个follow用了现在时，指的是一般情况。又如：
e.g.
    The teacher said that gases expand when heated.
    老师说气体加热会膨胀。（从句中expand用一般现在时表示是永恒真理。）
本段中 ...where my sister’s family lives. 部分动词也用了一般现在时，表示作者姐姐的家人在作者写这篇文章时仍住在那里。又如:
e.g.
    He told me he works there as an editor.
    他告诉我他在那里当编辑。（现在时表示他现在仍在那里做编辑。）
n. 葬礼,丧礼
e.g.
a. The funeral will be held in the nearest church.
    葬礼将在最近的教堂举行.
b. His bright clothes were not appropriate for a funeral.
    他的服装颜色鲜艳，不适宜在葬礼上穿。

e.g.
a. Do the laundry is one of my household chores.
    洗衣服是我要做的家事杂务之一。
b. He is prepared to make a living by accepting any remunerative chore.
    为了生计，他准备接受任何有酬报的杂活。

2. I thought about them on the plane returning to California from the Midwestern town where my sister’s family lives. I thought about all the things that she hadn’t seen or heard or done. I thought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special.
