植树节的故事
Arbor Day is an international holiday that fosters an appreciation of trees and their important value in our lives. The first Arbor Day held in the United States took place in Nebraska back on April 10, 1872. It was founded by J. Sterling Morton, who was a newspaper editor at the time. He and his wife were nature lovers, and Morton used his platform at the newspaper to share his love of trees. Nebraska was not a heavily wooded state; it's flat and open. So he taught his readers about planting trees to prevent soil erosion, provide shade, and to use as fuel and building materials.

Morton convinced the State Board of Agriculture to support a statewide holiday, which he called Arbor Day. He injected a little competition into the day by challenging counties and individuals to plant trees and offered prizes for those who planted the most. It is believed that more than a million trees were planted on that first Arbor Day in the U.S.

Over the next decade, other states began to celebrate Arbor Day. More than 30 years later, conservationists asked President Theodore Roosevelt to speak to public school children about the issue of conservation and forestry. Roosevelt agreed and in 1907, he issued an ''Arbor Day Proclamation to the School Children of the United States" about the importance of trees and that forestry deserves to be taught in U.S. schools.

是清明节还是植树节？
China's Tree-planting Day could date back to a proposal made by Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925), a great China revolution leader, to Beiyang Government (1915-1927) in 1915 and then regulation was formally publicized that Tomb-sweeping Festival (April 5th) was adopted as Tree-planting Day. However, April 5th was a late time for tree-planting in Southern China and so it was changed to March 12th by the Nanjing National Government (1927-1949) in order to memorize Sun Yat-sen, who passed away on March 12th.
中国的植树节可以追溯到伟大的中国革命领袖孙中山（1866-1925）在1915年向北洋政府（1915-1927）提出的建议，然后正式公布清明节（4月5日）为植树节的规定。然而，4月5日对于中国南方来说种植树木有些晚了，所以南京国民政府（1927-1949）将其改为3月12日，以纪念3月12日去世的孙中山先生。
In February 1979, the 5th National People's Congress of People Republic of China made a resolution that March 12th would be taken as Chinese Tree-Planting Day, requiring the whole country to carry out tree-planting activities on this day and support the construction of forestry.
