Tod Morgan was born blind, mentally challenged, andautistic. So he couldn’t see, he could not learn like other children, and hedidn’t interact with people very much. He did not seem to have much of achance. Then, when he was two years old, he began to play little songs on histiny toy piano. He could play perfectly some of the children’s tunes he hadheard.

Today, Tod works as a professional pianist. Heplays jazz, Broadway songs, and classical pieces. After hearing a tune, he canimitate it almost perfectly the first time he plays it. He doesn’t onlyimitate; Tod is creative too. He can change a classical piece to a jazz, a jazzto a polka, and a polka to a waltz. In addition to the piano,

Tod plays 13 other instruments and also sings.Tod’s list of musical heroes includes Louis Armstrong, Mozart, and Beethoven. How can this be? How can such a severely challenged person be so musicallytalented? Tod has what is called “savant syndrome” — a condition in which amentally challenged person has a highly developed talent of a specific kind.Savant syndrome is a mystery to medical researchers. One person who is studyingsavant syndrome is Dr. David Brighton. He says that he has never seen a musicalsavant like Tod. Most musical savants are limited to simply repeating tunes theyhear. Dr. Brighton points out that Tod’s ability to come up with his own tunesis a giant step beyond memorization.

As for Tod, after studying jazz piano at the MusicSchool at Rivers in Massachusetts, he attended and graduated from the famousBerklee College of Music in Boston. Tod is encouraged by his parents as heperforms all over the world, appearing on TV and radio shows.

24. What does the author mean by saying that Tod“did not seem to have much of a chance”?

Video conferencing has been around for more than 20years. Until the Covid-19 pandemic, though, you would find that many peopleneeding to attend a meeting remotely would be calling from a real conferenceroom full of their teammates. Today, we’re routinely holding videoconferences that are 100% virtual (虚拟). And this iscreating a problem that technology can’t fix.

The problem is us, specifically the fact that wehaven’t evolved socially to the point where we can bear much separation. Somuch of our well-being and work productivity is decided on how close we arephysically. The removal of that for any period of time can be severelydamaging. One surprising victim of social distancing is laughter.

Normally people laugh about 18 times per day. And97% of that time we’re laughing with others — we are 30 times more likely tolaugh with others than to laugh alone. Think about it: how often when you andyour friends laugh at something, is that something actually funny? Researchshows that 80% of what people laugh at is really not that funny.

So why do people laugh? They laugh in order tolaugh with others. Just as everyone starts yawning (打哈欠) when just one person yawns, most people can’t help but laugh when thosearound them do. This is why TV comedy shows often use prerecordedlaugh tracks.

Laughing in response to other people’s laughing isnot just a behavioral phenomenon. When we laugh, our body produces two keychemicals: endorphin which helps relieve pain and sets off feelings ofpleasure, and dopamine which can improve learning, motivation and attention. Infact, studies show that people can stand 15% more pain simply by laughing for afew minutes beforehand. Laughter is also associated with higher motivation andproductivity at work.

In today’s home-alone, virtual-team world, this isexactly what you as a team leader should be doing: for your team members tostay healthy and productive, you need to get them to laugh more and stressless.

C. Whether laughing is a behavioral phenomenon.

D. What chemicals our body produces when we laugh.

31. What would the author most probably discussnext?

A. Concrete steps to produce laughter in a team.

B. Other factors that may influence a team’shealth.

C. Ways to tell the real world from the virtualworld.

D. The importance of maintaining work productivity.

If you have trouble falling asleep, listen up. Youmight fall asleep 15 minutes earlier and wake up far less during the night ifyou put on a pair of socks at bedtime.

To understand why, you first need to grasp therelationship between core body temperature and sleep. During daylight hours, the human body has an average temperature of 37℃. But your core body temperaturedrops as much as 1.2℃ over one night’s sleep. This gradual decrease is a keypart of how we sleep. Put simply, the faster you can lower your core bodytemperature, the faster you will fall asleep.

One way that your body controls its temperature isthrough blood vessels (血管) in the skin. If your body is too hot, your bloodvessels widen, pushing the warmer blood nearer the skin’s surface, helping itto cool. If your body is too cold, the opposite happens. Your blood vesselsnarrow, restricting the flow of blood to the surface.

The palms of your feet are one of your body’s mostefficient heat exchangers, since they are hairless and less protected thanother skin surfaces. Researchers have shown that warming the feet before goingto sleep using a warm foot bath or by wearing socks promotes blood vessel widening, which in turn lowers the body’s core temperature faster than going to sleepwith cold, bare feet.

Scientists suspect that socked feet have asleep-benefiting effect on the brain as well. The warm-sensitive neurons (神经元) in the brain become more active when there’s a temperature differencebetween the body’s core and the feet. Researchers have found that these neuronsbecome more active as we get sleepy and slow down as we wake up, so that warmingup the feet before bedtime may give them an extra drive, making you feelsleepier.

In a small study, researchers found that wearing apair of special “sleeping socks” not only sped up the coming of sleep, butincreased overall sleep time by an average of 30 minutes and cut nighttimewaking episodes in half. If you’re worried about becoming too warm, look forsocks made of natural fibers.

32. In which section of a newspaper can we findthis text?

A. Advertisement. B. Lifestyle. C. Opinion. D.Trend.

33. What change does warm feet bring to the body?

A. Slowed brain reaction. B. Narrowed bloodvessels.

C. Reduced core body temperature. D. Decreasedblood pressure.

34. How might the brain’s warm-sensitive neuronshelp sleep?

A. They might help to warm up the feet.

B. They might speed up temperature growth.

C. They might slow down the brain’s blood flow.

D. They might bring on sleepiness when activated.

35. What is the finding of the small studymentioned in the last paragraph?

A. The warmth of socks depends on their material.

B. People wearing socks fall asleep 50 percentfaster.

C. Special socks increase temperature moreeffectively.

D. Sock wearing helps people sleep longer and wakeless.

Son, Here Is How You Save!

My wife and I recently welcomed a child into theworld. His only interest right now is keeping us awake 24/7. But one day, he’llneed to learn something about finance.    36

You might think you want an expensive car, a fancywatch, and a huge house. But you don’t. What you want is respect and admirationfrom other people.   37    It almost never does — especially from thepeople you want to respect and admire you.

38   Notstruggling, and not unhappy, of course. But there’s no way to learn the valueof money without feeling the power of lacking it. It teaches you the differencebetween necessary and desirable. It’ll make you learn to enjoy what you have, fix what’s broken, and shop for a bargain. These are primary survival skills.

Some people are born into families that encourageeducation; others are from families that are against it. Some are born into peaceand wealth; others, into war and poverty. I want you to be successful, and Iwant you to earn it. But realize that not all success is due to hard work andbeing poor is not always due to laziness.   39

Your savings rate has a little to do with how muchyou earn and a lot to do with how much you spend. I know a dentist who livespaycheck to paycheck, always on the edge of ruin. I know another person who hasnever earned more than $50,000 but saved a fortune.   40   Living with less is the most efficient way tocontrol your financial future.

Don’t listen to me if you disagree with what I’ve written. The world you grow up in will have different values and opportunities than theone I did. More importantly, you’ll learn best when you disagree with someoneand then are forced to learn it yourself. On the other hand, always listen toyour mother.

A. I hope you’re poor at some point.

B. If you do think so, you may get wrong.

C. When he does, here are some suggestions.

D. Your goals should be about more than money.

E. You think having something expensive will bringit.

F. The difference is entirely due to the way theyspend.

G. Keep this in mind when judging people, includingyourself.

Kathy’s family vacation to the beach was usuallythe highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a newrule: no phones for the entire week.

“But my friends will be expecting updates about thetrip,” Kathy complained. Kathy’s mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly,Kathy handed her phone over and her mom locked it away.

The drive to the beach house took most of the day.As they turned off the highway onto country back roads, the clouds darkened.Rain started to pour. “Even more beautiful in the rain,” her mother said. “Whatdo you think, Kathy?” Kathy glared at her mom. “Beautiful,” she muttered.

That night after dinner, Kathy wandered into thekitchen, where her father was washing dishes. She gave her father a loving lookand said in her sweetest voice, “Couldn’t I have my phone back, just for onesecond? Just so I can tell everyone what an amazing time I’m having?”

“Can’t,” he said. “It’s not here. Remember?” Kathywas very annoyed. Having nothing better to do, she examined the dusty bookcasein the living room. The books looked as dull as the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle. She took it, emptied the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.

After what seemed like a few minutes, she lookedup. It was past ten o’clock. She had been working for almost two hours! She yawned. The puzzle was less than half done, but she was exhausted. So, she went to bed.

When Kathy awoke the next morning, she jumped outof bed and threw open the curtains. A blazing sun was rising over the blueocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded Kathy of a photo that herfriend Betty had recently sent her.
