        本题测“what little + 名词”引导名词从句。

       

           奥巴马胜选演说中有这么一句话：It was built by working men and women who

dug into what little savings they had to give ＄5 and ＄10 and ＄20 to the cause.    

 (我们的竞选能有今天是因为辛勤工作的人们从自己的微薄积蓄中拿出钱来，捐5美元、

10美元或20美元支持竞选。)   这句话中用了what little savings they had，作定语

从句中谓语dug into 的宾语。

 

    “what little (few) + 名词+ 主谓语”是一特殊句型结构，表示“仅有的····

一点（一些）····”，属名词性从句，在句中多见用作主语或宾语，偶尔用作表语。

例如：

 

1. 作主语

 

1）What little information we have collectedis far from enough for us to make a

      final decision.   

 我们所收集到资料太少，远不够让我们做出最后的决定。

2）What little free time he hadwas spent with his wife and children.  

 他仅有的一点空余时间都是与其妻子和孩子们一起度过的。

3）What few friends I have therewere very kind to me druing my stay.   

 在我逗留期间，我在那里的仅有几个朋友对我很好。

4）What few words he said on the problemrevealed that he was a man of

      wisdom.   

在这个问题上他虽只说了短短几句话，却表明他是一个有智慧的人。

 

2. 作宾语

 

1）The accident completely wiped out what little sight he had left. 

这次事故使他仅有的一点视力也完全丧失了。

2）After sharing what little food they had, the old couple let the two angles sleep

      in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest.  

 这对老夫妇把仅有的一点点食物拿从来与两位天使分享，又让出自己的床给他们

 好好睡一觉。

3）The little boy use what little strength he had to push the door open.  

这小男孩使劲地把门推开。

4）I will lend you what few books I can spare.   

我愿意把我为数不多的那几本书都借给你。

5）When I studied at Vancouver Unviseristy, I attended what few lecutres

      Professor Smith gave us.

6）Though she could hardly make ends meet herself, she managed to save what

3. 作表语

 

 1）But here’s what few of us have learned: more than important than have a good

      job is learning how to make money work for you.    

我们当中只有少数人懂得，比有一份好工作更重要的是“让你的金钱为你工作”。

 

●   “what little  + 名词+ 主谓语” 有时可以转成“what little+ 主谓语”，不过

    此时 little 不是形容词，而是不定代词。例如：

 

 1）He claims to be an expert in astronomy, but in actural fact he is quite ignorant on

      the subject. What little he knows a bout it is out of date and inaccurate.

 他自称是天文学方面的专家,但是事实上他对这一领域知之甚少。他所都知道的一

 点点天文知识也是过时的和不准确的。

 2）The home improvements have taken what little there is of my spare time.  

 改善家居条件占据了我仅有的一点点空余时间。

 3）He could talk endlessly by the yard of what little he did know.     

 他可以把他所知道的一点点东西滔滔不绝地谈个不停。
