leave no stones unturned

leave no stones unturned   “想方设法”、“千方百计”、“不遗余力”，

指尽一切努力做成某事或找到某物（to do everything possible in order to achieve or 

find something ）。

这一习语起源于十六世纪中叶。据说在古希腊有一位将军打了败扙后将财宝藏在帐篷

底下。获胜的将军得知消息后，让他的军队去找，可是没有找到。于是他到一位圣人

那里去请神谕。这位圣人让他到每一块石头下面去找。他命令他的军队把每一块石头

翻个底朝天，直到找到了财宝。

这个故事后来被人们用来表示：要想做成一件事就，就得尽一切努力不遗余力地去做，

就一定能成功。

   

leave no stones unturned 主要有三种用法：

 

A.   leave no stones unturned in + 名词短语（常接表示努力寻找、寻求的短

语  in the effort、in search for, in quest for 等。）

 

1）We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to find the culprit.

我们将不遗余力找到罪魁祸首。

2）He left no stone unturned in his search for his natural mother.

他千方百计地找到了他的亲生母亲。

3）The leaders of the countries involved in the dispute claim they've left no stone

unturned in their quest for a peaceful solution.

这场争瑞的各国领导人声称他们已经想尽了一切努力寻求一个和平的解决方案。

 

B.  leave no stones unturned in doing sth. （接in doing sth.）

 

1）He left no stone unturned in finding out the girl’s address.

他千方百計地想找出這個女孩的地址。

2）Jake's lawyer promised that he would leave no stone unturned in trying to

find more evidence to help Jake's case.

杰克的律师承诺他将不遗余力找到更多的证据来帮助杰克的案子。

3）He said he will leave no stone unturned in proving her innocence.

     他说他会想方设法证明她是无辜的。

 

 

C.  leave no stones unturned to do sth. （接动词不定式）

 

1）The customers are the key to your enterprise's survival. So, it is necessary to

 leave no stone unturned to obtain their favor. 

顾客是你的企业生存下去的关键，所以要千方百计地获得他们的青睐。 

2）It was my duty to leave no stone unturned to discover and expose the awful

truth. 

我的责任就是想方设法发现这可怕的真相并公之于众。 

3）Leave no stone unturned to help your clients realize maximum profits from

their investment. 

      要不遗余力地帮助客户从投资中获取最大的利润。

4）They promised that they will leave no stone unturned to find the solution to

the problem.

他们承诺他们会千方百计地寻找解决这个问题的办法。
