精读美国独立宣言

    我一向提倡读经典，精读经典政论文也是内容之一。虽然俺对应试没兴趣，可没想到歪打正着，随着新SAT阅读的出炉，俺们居然也应试了哈。

去年除了读独立宣言，还读了艾默生的“The American Scholar"片段，和蒙田的“Of the Education ofChildren”片段。独立宣言花的时间最长，每一句话都要求彻底搞明白，很多句子做4层语法分析（词性，句子成分，短语，主从句），部分句子要求paraphrase，还要求翻译成中文。

独立宣言的 audiences 包括下面几类人：英王，英国人民，美国人民，全世界，作者们都要顾及到。

独立宣言是经典的演绎式论证（deductive argument），即从普遍性结论开始（setting up generalstatements)，然后给出实例(relating particular cases tothem)，最后推导出个别性结论(drawing conclusion)。

整个独立宣言分为5部分：

第一部分the introduction：第一段，就一个长句子一气呵成。

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for onepeople to dissolve the political bands which have connected themwith another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, theseparate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and ofNature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions ofmankind requires that they should declare the causes which impelthem to the separation.

把“one people”追求独立放在历史的长河中“in the course of humanevents”，而且这种诉求是天赋 "the Laws of Nature and of Nature's Godentitle them" ，是普世"the opinions ofmankind," 它给予独立道义上的合法性，是超越美国殖民地人民和英国统治者小我之争的事儿，把独立升华到人类的道义的层面。这里 British,America 两个字提都没提。（无论那个闹独立的国家，都可以拿这个第一段当宣言，一个字都不用改。）

这句话没有采用说服（persuasive）的手法，因为说服永远暗示会有一个反方。它根本就不容有反方，不是主观意愿，是客观事实，闹独立对“onepeople”是非常"necessary"的。它直接了当地对世界“declare” 各种促使“one people” 宣布脱离“another” people的理由。

用词也是非常讲究的，“one people” 要跟“another”people 分离，首先我们没法不 separate,我们已经是两种不同的people了，断然不可能在和好如初了，Thomas Paine 的话糙一点， 不可能"give toprostitution its former innocence." 其次，我们是 people to people,对等的，我们这边的“one people”不是 rebel，因为 Samuel Adams 说过，rebel不可能得到其他国家的长期支持，也不可能合法地跟其它国家立合约。

为什么这句话读着有如此的节奏感和韵律感，看这些用词：when,in, human, events,one, bands, connected, another, decent,mankind;

其它修辞手法如 “dissolve the political band”: 使用了 figurativelanguage。

Jefferson写完独立宣言初稿后，先是由亚当斯和富兰克林修改，然后是整个Congress一起讨论修改。这个是Jefferson的introduction部分的初稿：(红字粗体部分是两个版本的不同之处）

读懂独立宣言，或其他 Founding documents, 其实要了解美国历史。教科书中学最好的是Joy Hakim的11本系列，高中首推The AmericanPageant（是AP教材）。不喜欢教科书的话，更好的读物是史书，和历史小说。比如英文程度很好的高中孩子，可以看DavidMcCullough的 1776 和 John Adams. 小孩子可以读Jean Fritz的系列。中学孩子可以读的American Hitory Stories 四卷。
