Beat around the bush, 千万别翻译成“在灌木丛里打架”

做英语翻译时，有时候直译可是不行哒，比如说busboy，真正的意思是“餐馆勤杂工”，很多人就误解成了“公车售票员”（尴尬……）

对于比较高级一点的表达，比如beat around the bush，很多小伙伴就更头大了，beat=打击，around=周围，bush=灌木丛。难道，意思是“在灌木丛里打架”？

其实，beat around the bush并不是“在草丛里打架”，它真正的意思是：

To avoid talking about what is important.

避免谈论事情的重点。据说以前的猎人为了把狼引出，故意用敲打灌木丛--这种“旁敲侧击”的方式，来实现自己的目的。久而久之，beat around the bush就逐渐演变成“兜圈子，绕弯子，说话拐弯抹角”的意思。

我们来看两个例句：

Jennifer: I've been working here for a long time now, and I've learnt a lot. And I feel like I've been very useful to the company...

Boss: Yeah, but you're clearly beating around the bush here. What do you really want to talk to me about?
