How to magnetise Mars
Transforming Mars for human habitation is a distant dream. One problem, among many, is that Earth’s nearest neighbour has almost no magnetic field. Without this shield, Martian explorers would be exposed to deadly radiation from solar storms. A new paper in Acta Astronautica, a journal, proposes a novel—and wildly ambitious—strategy to give Mars an artificial magnetic field.
Many planets have belts of ionised plasma around them, and the planets’ magnetic fields generate electric currents in them. The idea for Mars is to do the reverse: create such a belt and pass currents through it to generate a magnetic field. The material for this could be released from one of Mars’s moons. Hare-brained though it might sound, the scheme has input from NASA’s science chief. If humans are ever to colonise Mars, it will require plenty of red-sky thinking like this.

如要构建行星磁场，需要一个强大的带电粒子流，无论是在行星内部还是在行星周围。
因为行星内部并不是一个好的选择，所以研究人员选择了在行星周围进行磁场创建。
如果在火星周围创造一个带电粒子环，就需要卫星火卫一的帮助。
火卫一是火星的两颗卫星之中较大的一颗，它绕着火星运转的距离相当近，每8小时就会绕着火星转一圈。
因此，研究人员建议通过电离火卫一表面的粒子，然后对其进行加速，从而沿着火卫一的轨道形成一个等离子体带。
