Charles Lindbergh was born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 4, 1902. Soon after, his family moved to Little Falls, Minnesota, where he grew up.
In 1920, Lindbergh entered the Univer- sity of Wisconsin. He left after two years to go to a flying school at Lincoln, Nebraska. At the age of 21, he bought a plane and immediately began solo flying.
For a few years, Lindbergh flew for the United States Air Service Reserve and was chief pilot on the Chicago St.Louis air mail route.
Then, in 1927, when he was 25 years old, Lindbergh became world famous almost overnight.
Lindbergh decided to try for the $25,000 prize being offered for the first nonstop flight from New York to Paris, France. Lindbergh had a special airplane built. He named it The Spirit of St. Louis.
On May 20, 1927, Lindbergh took off alone from Roosevelt Field near New York City. He landed in Paris 33 hours and 32 minutes later. Lindbergh had flown over 3,600 miles nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean. The French people honored Charles Lindbergh. He became a hero in the United States and around the world.
Lindbergh spent the following years making goodwill flights to Mexico, the Central American countries, and South America. He received the Woodrow Wilson Peace Award and a Congressional medal. In 1932, Charles Lindbergh and his wife, Anne, suffered a great personal tragedy. Their infant son was kidnapped7 and murdered.
Charles Lindbergh died on August 26, 1974, in Hawaii, where he was living at that time.
