Medal of Honor
Since ancient times, governments have awarded medals to individuals to preserve the memory of an outstanding action or event. Early Greek and Roman medals were given as prizes in athletic games. Medals are still the prizes given to the winners at the Olympic Games.
Medals are also given to members of the armed forces(陆海空三军). United States medals include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart. The U.S. Medal of Honor is the highest award given to military heroes. Millions of men and women perform their duties in the military very well. Some, however, have braved dangers when they were not expected to brave them. They have overcome difficulties that were thought to be impossible. They faced death even when it meant they might lose their own lives. These are the people who earn the Medal of Honor.
The first person to be awarded the U.S. Medal of Honor was Colonel Bernard Irwin. On February 13, 1861, he showed extraordinary courage while leading his troops in a battle with the Chiricahua Apache Indians at Apache Pass, in what is now Arizona.
Of the millions of people who have served in the armed forces, only a few thousand have received the Medal of Honor. It is, indeed a very special award.
