Henry Hudson was an English sea captain and explorer探险者. He was probably born in 1570. He made four major ocean voyages. Several places have been made after him.
In May 1607, he set sail from England. He and his crew全体船员, including his son, sailed closer to the North Pole than any other explorer at that time. He was searching for a passage to China. When he found there was no way through the North Pole, he returned to England.
In 1608, he tried again but failed to find a passage. In 1609, he sailed a ship owned by Holland. He ended up off the coast of present-day Maine缅因州. Further south, he found the river known today as the Hudson River. He claimed the land along the river for Holland. Later the Dutch settled the area and founded New Amsterdam, which is now New York.
His fourth journey was from England in April 1610. He headed northwest. The weather was bad and the seas were icy. The ship made its way through an icy passage known today as Hudson Strait海峡. In August, he sighted a huge body of water that he thought was the Pacific Ocean. It was instead the large body of water now called Hudson Bay. In November, while still exploring, his ship was frozen in. His crew was angry, sick, and cold. In June, the ice melted and the ship was freed. Hudson wanted to continue sailing westward.
On June 22, 1611, the crew forced Hudson, his son, and some sick sailors onto a small boat. They were set adrift漂泊的 and were never heard from again. The remaining crew sailed back to England.
