The Saint Lawrence River (圣劳伦斯河) connects the five Great Lakes (五大湖）to the Atlantic Ocean (大西洋）.It forms part of the border between Canada and the United States. Until 1959, only small boats could travel between the ocean and the lakes. That is because a 186-mile stretch一段路程 of the river was not deep enough for large boats. The stretch was between the east end of Lake Ontario (安大略湖）and the city of Montreal (蒙特 利尔）in Canada.
In 1954, the United States and Canada agreed to share the cost of building dams坝, canals运河, and locks水闸on that part of the river. The water would have to be at least 27 feet deep all the way.
The river drops 226 feet between Lake Ontario and Montreal. This causes water to flow swiftly迅速地 in some places. Three canals were built to go around the worst rapids. Three dams were built to create a large lake. Seven locks were built to raise and lower ships at certain water levels.
A lock is an enclosed把……围起来 section of the river. It has solid gates at each end. The gate at one end opens. A ship goes into the lock. The gate is closed. Water is let in or out until it is level with the water outside in front of the ship. The other gate opens. The ship moves out. It takes about 35 minutes for a ship to pass through a lock. The ship can be raised or lowered up to 40 feet inside the lock.
The new seaway had its official opening on June 26,1959. Ships can now travel on 9,500 miles of water in the river and all around the Great Lakes.
