Margaret Mitchell became a famous author with just one book. The book was Gone with the wind (《飘》,又名《乱世佳人》).
Margaret was born in 1900 in Atlanta, Georgia. Her family had lived in Atlanta for over 100 years. They knew firsthand第一手地 about slavery and about the Civil war. Margaret learned about those times through stories told by older family members.
She was away at college when her mother died in 1919. She returned home to take care of her father and brother. She got a job as a reporter for an Atlanta newspaper. A leg injury forced her to leave the job in 1926.
For the next three years, she worked on a romantic novel about the Civil War.
She remembered the stories she had heard as a child and knew well the history of the South. The story featured主要描述 a young woman named Scarlett O'Hara. It tells how she survived幸存 that tragic悲惨的 time.
By the time it was finished, Margaret had written 1,000 pages. She wasn't sure it was worth publishing. It lay in a drawer for six years. She finally gave it to a book company in 1935.

On August 11, 1949, a car struck Margaret as she crossed a street. She died a few days later of the injuries.
