American Bandstand was the longest running musical show in television history. It was a show mainly for teenagers. The music was mostly rock-and-roll. Dancing was a major feature.
The show started in 1952 as a local program shown only in the Philadelphia area. It was called Bandstand. Bob Horn was the host. High school students were invited to come and dance while Hon played records.
On July 9, 1956, Dick Clark took over the show. He was 26 years old. He knew almost none of the songs. But he loved working with the teens. He learned from them the favorite songs, clothing trends流行趋势, and the latest dance steps.
In 1957, the show went national on ABC TV. It was renamed American Bandstand. It aired every weekday from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. It was the perfect time to reach teens coming home from school.
By the end of I958, 20 million fans were watching American Bandstand. Almost every teenager in America knew who Dick Clark was.
Record companies were eager热切的 to have a new song played on the show. It almost guaranteed that thousands of the record would be sold in the next week. Many of the early rock-and-roll stars got their start appearing on the show. Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, and Chubby Checkers were among the many who gained获得 fame there.
Dick dark hosted American Bandstand until 1989. He became known as the world's oldest teenager. He was inducted列入 into the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame (名人堂）in 1993.
