The National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR)全国运动汽车竞赛协会 has been holding races for over 60 years. A popular driver in the early days of racing was a woman named Louise Smith.
Louise was born on July 31, 1916 in Barnesville, Georgia. She got into auto racing at a time when most women were homemakers. And she started because of a friend's suggestion!
NASCAR held a race at the Greenville Pickens Speedway in South Carolina. Bill France was NASCAR's founder and president. The friend told France he should let Louise drive in the race. He said she could "outrun超过 every highway patrol and lawman in Greenville.” No woman had ever driven in a NASCAR race. But France agreed to let her drive. She finished in third place.
After that, France used Louise in other races to attract a crowd. People liked watching the lady driver with the fearless attitude态度.
Louise raced between 1946 and 1956. In the ten years, she won 38 times. When asked years later about her unusual career, Louise said, "I enjoyed every minute. I traveled all over North America. I raced everywhere I could. Didn't make a whole lot of money. If I could do it again today, I would. The cars are a lot faster now, but I think I could do it."
In the 1970s, Louise became involved in NASCAR racing again. She didn't drive, but she sponsored赞助 three other drivers. Louise died on April 15, 2006.
