Alfred Hitchcock was born August 13, 1899, in London. He studied art and engineering in college. He was always a big movie fan. When he was 20, Hitchcock landed a job designing title cards for a movie studio. Three years later, he got his first chance at directing when the director of a film in progress became ill. The studio was so impressed with his work they gave him more directing jobs.
The Lodger, made in 1926, was about a family who wrongfully错误地 thought their roomer was Jack the Ripper杀人碎尸者.It was Hitchcock's first “thriller"惊悚电影. From then on, all of his movies centered around mystery, suspense悬疑, deception欺骗, and mistaken identities身份.
Hitchcock moved to Hollywood in 1939. His first American film, called Rebecca, won an Academy Award for best picture. For the next thirty years, he made a movie a year. Among them were The Birds, Dial M for Murder, and Psycho.
In most of his movies, Hitchcock made a short, wordless appearance in a bit part. It always came at the beginning of the film. He knew viewers were watching for him and he didn't want to take their attention away from the story's plot.
Hitchcock also made several films for television. One series, called Alfred Hitchcock Presents always began with his profile sketch速写 filling the screen. Then he would give a short introduction to the story to set up the suspense.
Altogether, he made over 50 full-length movies. He received the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award in 1979. He was also knighted封……为爵士 by England's Queen Elizabeth II. He died in California in 1980 at age 81.
