Earlier this month, consulting firm Bain & Co. surveyed 1,834business professionals world-wide ongender parity in the workplace. Thefindings, which was presented atthe World Economic Forum in Davos,Switzerland, show that 90% and 85%of men and women, respectively, believe qualified applicants of eithergender have the same shot atlanding a junior-level position. Yet 81%of men said opportunities tomove to middle management are gender neutral, compared with 52% ofwomen.Similarly, 66% of men said promotions to the executive level areequallyattainable by both sexes, versus 30% of women。

In reality, women represent a much smaller portion of leadershiproles in business. A December study from New York research concernCatalyst Inc. shows 3% of chief executive officers and 13.5%ofexecutive-officer positions within Fortune 500 companies are women。

Men's perceptions may be rosier than women's because they maybeconsidering the long-term progress women have made in theworkplace, says Ellen Galinsky, president of Families & WorkInstitute in NewYork. Men will 'say women have it a lot better than theydid in thepast,' she says. 'Women say, 'Yes, but there are a lot fewerof us andwe had to give up a lot more to get there.''

Perceptions may play a role in women lagging behind men inadvancingtheir careers, says Deborah M. Kolb, a professor specializingin womenand leadership at Simmons School of Management in Boston. Ms.Kolb saysstudies have shown women are seen by bosses and colleagues --men andwomen alike -- as being less capable of serving in leadershippoststhan men, despite evidence to the contrary. 'Women often get askedtotake career detours . . . into areas like human resources,' shesays.'Men get asked to take on strategic-development activities.'
