如果说哈利是天生的魔法师，那么德思礼一家一定是天生的演员，全世界都欠他们一座奥斯卡奖。
为了满足自己各种欲望，表哥会发怒（a huge Dudley tantrum ），干嚎（wail），装哭（pretend sobs），还不忘在妈咪臂弯冲哈利狞笑（nasty grin）。
遇到一丁点小事就小题大做的姨妈，前一秒可以对自己的天使小宝贝展开慈母微笑，喊着亲亲小宝贝（sweetums, dinky Duddydums）后一秒可以对哈利这只‘slug’，露出母夜叉般的凶残。让哈利独自在家是万万不能的，这让她感觉像swallow a lemon 。带哈利去商场，遇见陌生人和哈利打招呼，见鬼似的急忙带着大家逃难回家（rush them out of the shop without buying anything）。
而甜菜头（gigantic beetroot）姨夫更是没事就发飙，超爱把自己本来就已经很红的脸，生生憋成受了内伤的猪腰子。哈利只是说了句梦见自己骑着摩托飞，他要夸张到nearly crashed into a motorbike ，然后回头喊（yell）着训话。
来瞧瞧啥是甜菜头，太像了！佩服罗琳！
这一家子，不是天生戏精，还能是什么（预告一下，下一章的表演更精彩）！

这一章罗琳用不少的笔墨来对比两个孩子的生活境况，既搞笑又生动，当然也有点点凄凉。
先看外形描述：
达力：10年前的他—looked like a large pink beach ball wearing different-coloured bobble hats
现在的他—large, blond, four times bigger than Harry, pink face, not much neck（这点随爸爸了）, small watery blue eyes, like a pig in a wig（这是哈利的描述，很贴切嘛）, look remarkably like a gorilla
哈利: 现在的他—small, skinny, thin face, knobbly knees, black hair grew all over the place（all over 两个字听着就凌乱）, bright green eyes, a lightening scar on his forehead, baggy clothes, taped glasses
家庭地位：
达力:
lots pictures on the mantelpiece,
his parents’ baby angel,
thirty-nine presents or maybe more on his birthday,
got whatever he wanted
哈利:
The room held no sign at all that another boy lived in the house, too. （光这一句就很凄凉了，无视是最强烈的鄙视）
live in the dark cupboard with spiders, （人与自然很和谐）
wear old clothes of Dudley’s,
help to prepare the breakfast,
never allowed to ask questions,
no one(relatives or classmates even the headmaster) likes him
这种寄人篱下又屈辱的生活一定给小小的哈利制造了很多心理阴影，他经常梦想自己被其他亲戚接走，但可惜的是德思礼一家是他唯一的亲戚。虽然一直被姨夫一家不公平对待，被欺负，被误解，但是庆幸这一切都没有抹杀掉哈利心中的善良，还有很多爱他的人在身边，只是他不知道而已。
这一章的标题就是 “THE VANISHING GLASS”，同时讲了很多哈利小时候的怪事情。而最近发生的就是哈利在动物园里放走巨蟒，（虽然他不知道是因为自己的魔法）。
我个人认为这是他内心向往自由的一种表现，巨蟒住在这种地方一定比自己住的cupboard 还要惨，所以他的内心对巨蟒也有着深深的同情，而巨蟒对哈利的理解，再加上达力及其伙伴对巨蟒的二次骚扰，激起了哈利的强烈情绪，因此玻璃消失了，他的巨蟒伙伴，终于获得自由，可以去自己本来该属于的地方。
虽然他不知道自己做了什么，而且这莫名其妙的一切给他换来了禁闭，但是我相信这件事在小哈利的心里一定有很大的触动，而且在他心里一定也第一次感受到朋友(amigo)的力量。
他未知的本能触动了这一切的发生，而且也为我们日后即将看到的勇敢和善良的哈利买下了伏笔。
小知识：
1. 今天他们去动物园，达力由于爸爸买的knickerbocker glory份量不够大，大发了脾气，那先来看看英文释义这东西到底是啥 :
A knickerbocker glory is a layered cream sundae that is served in a large tall conical glass to be eaten with a distinctive long spoon, particularly in the British Isles.
所以简单来说就是一种英式的冰激凌圣代，也有中文翻译成彩宝圣代。看下图
除了这个甜品，罗琳在本书中还写了很多其他英国传统美食（虽然不知道是不是真的好吃，但是听着就饿），咱们后面再说。
另外看到这个，很多小伙伴会说和芭菲很像，没错，确实很像。
彩宝圣代 (Knickerbocker glory)是一种盛在大高脚杯中的冰激凌圣代，主要在英国出售。它有多种口味，其制作原料包含冰淇淋、果冻、奶油，蛋白蛋糕，水果，还可能含有酒精。此外，上面还可以覆上各种糖浆、坚果、生奶油和樱桃。
“芭菲”是法语Parfait的音译，做形容词是完美的意思，即英文的perfect。冰淇淋水果冻。是一种会在长玻璃杯中放入冰激淋、水果、奶油、巧克力酱、坚果等的甜点。
2. 关于“蛇”，大家第一个想到的是snake ,但是书中还有其他的表达，我们一起看一下：

而蟒蛇在文中有两种：

从上面的描述来看，两种蛇的居住环境、捕食习性、身长、重量都很像，唯一还有些不同的应该就是盛产的国家了和长相了。

时间飞逝，十年过去了，让我们来看看小Harry在Dursleys姨母一家的生活状况，不意外，他过得不好：
1.他的外表是a thin face, knobbly knees, black hair and bright green eyes, in his baggy old clothes and broken glasses, certainly a very thin scar on his forehead that shaped like a bolt of lightning；
2.他穿的衣服，All Harry had to wear were old clothes of Dudley, who was about four times bigger than Harry was；
3.他睡觉的地方，a cupboard under the stairs which was full of spiders；
4.他被周围人对待的方式，经常被Dudley一伙人追着打，Dudley’s favorite punching bag was Harry, 在学校被孤立没有朋友，because nobody liked to disagree with Dudley’s gang.
此外，Dursley夫妇给小Harry立一条规矩“Don’t ask questions”,he was forbidden to ask about his parents, there were no photographs of Harry and his parents in Dursley’s house.
在这对Harry来说痛苦的十年中，依旧有Dursley夫妇阻挡不了的离奇事件发生在Harry身上：
Harry’s short hair grew back so quickly in the way it shouldn’t happen. He could reach on the roof of school kitchens when he just tried to jump behind the big trash cans.
To surprised everyone, the glass front of the Boa constrictor’s tank had vanished after Harry talked to the snake.
巴西蟒蛇挣脱牢笼逃走，再加上Harry街上遇到的一系列奇怪的陌生人（the ones who bowed to him, waved merrily at him, shook hands）似乎都在昭示着，something was coming on.
PS:这章查了几个 Dursley一家发出声音和语气的词汇：
1.chuckle, 轻声地笑，咯咯低笑
2.snigger，窃笑
3.snarl, 咆哮，怒骂
4.bark，狗吠式尖叫
5.screach 尖叫

难以想象，对待失去双亲的孩子，还是自己亲妹妹的骨肉，德斯利一家没有更偏爱哈利一些，也没有同等待之，竟是让他住在楼梯下面。
爬满了蜘蛛的狭窄储物间里，衣服都是达力的旧衣服，生日从来没人给庆祝，连巧克力冰淇淋都只买给达力和他的朋友，只给哈利一根便宜的柠檬冰棒…
不是生活在没有爱的氛围里，而是11年里一直是爱的旁观者，看过无数次，读到这里还是心疼不已，但哈利却成长的聪明善良，待人谦和有礼；
较之溺爱下的达力，让人倒吸一口凉气，这解答了我一个关于教和养的迷团，世上为什么会有熊孩子，他父母自身就只“熊”…不说三观、不提格局，只想请德斯利一家善良
大过年的，祝长脖子姨妈一夜长出络腮胡，福农姨父讲话声音变成lady，达利每次欺负人就生出一颗獠牙
The second chapter shows us a profile of Harry’s miserable life in #4, Privet Drive by some strong contrast.
One is the jollification of the Dursleys vs the “no sign at all” of Harry’s. Sleeping in the cupboard under the stairs which was full of spiders, wearing the baggy old clothes of Dudley’s, being bullied by his own cousin, being punished for radicular reasons, longing for leaving but having nowhere to go, no friends, no presents, no entertainment, and no information about his parents.
I wonder if young readers can understand the deep loneliness hidden behind those funny words. I can’t help imagining a Harry in a non-fiction book, with all these unfair experience, what a depressive boy would he be!
Considering his talent, it would not surprise me if he becomes the second Moriarty. Fortunately, we have a real evil – you know who – in this world.
Therefore, the Dursleys are far underqualified to be villains even though they treaded Harry quite mean. On the other hand, are they really bad guys as the author uglified intentionally?
At least, they accepted Harry in infancy and raised him up. They hated Harry just because of his parents, strange things around him, or fundamentally, the magic power.
Perhaps, their hatred did not come from their mind but from their fear.
Another contrast is Harry’s first “amigo” – boa constrictor. No human beings around him could understand him, they even didn’t want to try.
Whereas he found the same feeling in a snake –nearly “died of boredom itself”, and he seemed not the worst one – his “cage” only had one visitor who didn’t disturb him all day long.
Since we all know what would happen in the next few years, I dare to suspect this story is a hint, or the snake itself is as well. (No, it is not a spoiler!)
Poor Harry has a miserable life in the Dursleys.I feel sorry for the little boy who live without love.at the same time，
Dudley gets the excessive love from his parents.they spoil Dudley，and give the best things to Dudley，
The room holds no sign at all that another boy lived in the house.
But，Harry doesn't lose hope，he tries to remember the beautiful dream，and enjoy in meeting the supernatural things.
I think the anonymous letter will give Harry some clues to understand a series of mysterious things around him, Even though the Dursleys hate him to kown something.Does Harry have a new life after the 12th birthday？
I look forward to next.
Our little boy had lived at No.4 Privet Drive for 10 years. Life was not always happy for all of us, especially for Harry.
Mr Dursley considered everything should act in a way it should, so that he couldn’t bear anything beyond his understanding such as the magical stuff.
In Mrs Dursley’s eyes, her perfect family had been ruined since Harry appeared 10 years ago. Their son treated Harry as a punch-bag to express his tantrum and boredom.
On Dudley’s birthday , the Dursleys had to take Harry to the zoo. Magic occurred at the moment when Harry and snake stared at each other.
The giant snake was trapped in the zoo, while Harry was held in the cupboard of the Dursleys.Both of them felt lonely, missing their own family and were treated unfriendly.
Yes, They had the same fate. Harry showed his pity to snake and even was not aware of the ability to talk with animals.Though he had similar experience in the past that something weird happened on him.
