The Manchester Tattoo Appeal - why people are getting Manchester bee tattoos to show solidarity in the face of terror

Manchester tattoo artists have announced an appeal to raise money for the victims and families affected by the suicide bomber attack in Manchester on Monday May 22.

Artists are offering tattoos of a bee - an icon which has become a symbol of Manchester - for £50, and all of the profits will go to the Crowdfunder appeal.

Launched by Stalybridge-based tattoo artist Sam Barber, the word has spread quickly throughout Greater Manchester and beyond - with tattoo parlours in Bristol, Glasgow, and reportedly some as far as Australia taking part.

Chorlton-based tattoo parlour Sacred Art will be opening its doors at 10am this Sunday, inspired by Barber's original campaign.

"I think people just don't know what to do, and they want to do something," said Sacred Art manager Vent Brewer. "They want to give, but they don't know where to give, and they don't know who to give to.”

"The bee and getting this tattoo will make people feel as though they're making a contribution towards a peaceful resolution," he adds.

Facebook event figures indicate that 1,700 people are expected to descend on the Barlow Moor Road establishment - making this a huge undertaking for the small studio.

"The response has been overwhelming," said Vent. "I'd like to see a load of people outside the studio on Sunday morning feeling as though they're part of something. I think its easy to feel detached with something like this and I think that's why some people actively pursue ways of making a contribution.”

And it's not just tattoo-fans who are expected to turn up on the day, Vent adds.

"We've had people from all ages – from young people to those who are like 70 or 80 years old. We've had people from all walks of life inquiring."

Vent and his team of around eight will work through the queue on a first come first served basis, and no bookings are being taken for the event.

"We're just going to do as many as possible," he says. "Ive asked the team to work 'till 6 but I think we'll work beyond that.”

"I think for all those people who are going to be stood waiting or getting tattoos – it says a lot about the city, and our resilience, and our desire to come together."
