China is poised to seek $500,000 in compensation from Japan after Xing Xing, a giant panda it had lent to a Japanese zoo, died during an operation to collect semen, Shanghai's Oriental Morning Post reported. Experts in China claim that the death of the panda was the result of the animal being given too much sedative. China's government has announced it is sending a panel of experts to investigate the death of Xing Xing. The State Forestry Administration, which leases pandas to foreign countries, has ordered that the corpse be sealed until the inspection team arrives at Oji Zoo in Kobe to determine the exact cause of death.

The death comes at an unfortunate moment in China-Japan relations as the two nations remain at loggerheads over the arrest of a Chinese trawler captain by the Japanese coastguard last week, an incident that has provoked increasingly testy diplomatic exchanges.

Bargaining is often unavoidable when shopping in China. But now, online at least, you can outsource that pesky task. A middleman will bargain on your behalf with e-retailers. 'Net bargainer' services are booming in China's fast-growing online-shopping industry, Xinhua reported. A search for 'net bargainer' on taobao.com, China's largest online shopping website, yields 2,186 search results. One college student said she earned 3,000 yuan per month as an online bargainer during the summer vacation.

Cuba announced Monday it is to lay off 'at least' half a million state workers over the next six months. It will simultaneously allow more jobs to be created in the private sector, CNN reported. The plan, announced in state media, confirms that President Raul Castro is following through on a pledge to shed 1 million state jobs, a full fifth of the official workforce. Castro had announced layoffs in August, but said they would occur over the next five years. He had previously initiated only minor free-market reforms since taking over from his brother Fidel Castro in 2006.

Intel has created a revolutionary chipset code-named Sandy Bridge that combines a microprocessor and a graphics processor on a single silicon chip, the BBC reported. Putting the two processors together will cut the time it takes to generate images, as it removes bottlenecks between the graphics processor and memory. It will also improve battery life and power consumption.

Burberry's strategy represents a huge change from the past, when a literal golden ticket was the only way to see its show. This time, 1,500 people will be invited to Burberry stores worldwide, where they will watch the show on high-definition screens and be able to order merchandise immediately via iPad for delivery in seven weeks' time.

The park intends to build replicas of, among other things, the Wall of Lamentations and a Roman court house. But the plan is yet to be approved by the local government.

The Saudi arms effort is in large part directed at providing a modernized capability against Iran.

A rare Chinese stamp from 1897 has fetched nearly 3 million yuan at auction in Hong Kong, the Daily Telegraph reported. The 'Small One Dollar' stamp is one of 32 recorded copies in existence and described as 'the king of stamps' in China.

Apple announced Monday that official sales of Wi-Fi models of the iPad tablet computer will begin this Friday in China, Xinhua reported. Prices will remain at 3,988 yuan for the 16-gigabyte iPad and 5,588 yuan for the 64-gigabyte model.

A study by University of Westminster scientists shows that shopping has a similar effect on the brain to watching pornographic films, the Daily Telegraph reported. Consumers offered discounts or other promotions on a range of consumer goods showed a mental response resembling that of sexual arousal, the researchers found. Having wired up 50 volunteers, the scientists monitored their eye movements and emotional responses to the products and graded them on a scale of 1 to 10. A high of 10 is the equivalent to severe trauma, which is rarely seen and could be dangerous. But a score of between 5 and 7 is the kind of excitement a body has to erotic images such as pornography. One Marmite promotion, to get a free audiobook featuring the children's character Horrid Henry, registered a score of up to 5.8 among the consumers.

She's been banned from keeping animals and was ordered to do 75 hours of unpaid work.
