leopard表示“豹子”,spot表示“斑点”,该习语的字面意思是“豹子无法改变它身上的斑纹”,用来喻指一个人很难改变他长久以来养成的习惯,即“积习难改”。

After our breakup, he came crawling back, trying to convince me that he'd changed, but I know that a leopard can't change its spots.

【闲话习语】
该习语最早是在《圣经》里出现,自从有了英文版的《圣经》后,才得以广泛普及使用。最早的使用记录出现在1560年在日内瓦出版的《日内瓦圣经》(Geneva Bible)里:“Can the blacke More change his skin? or the leopard his spottes?”
