三、课文主要语言点

In 1858, a French engineer, Aime Thome de Gamond, arrived in England with a plan for a twenty-one-mile tunnel under the English Channel.	1）注意句中的人名与engineer是同位语关系，所以在阅读中可以跳过。 2）tunnel，隧道。
He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the centre of the Channel.	1）it+be+possible+to do，做某事是可能的。 2）platform，平台、站台。 3）in the centre of，在...的中心。注意centre为英式英语的拼法，美式英语拼作center。
This platform would serve as a port and a railway station.	1）serve as，用作...，充当...。 2）注意port（人工港）与harbour（天然港）的区别。
The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level.	1）well-ventilated，通风良好的。 2）chimney，烟囱。 3）sea level，海拔。
In 1860, a better plan was put forward by an Englishman, William Low. He suggested that a double railway tunnel should be built.	1）put forward，提出。 2）suggest表示建议时，宾语从句中的谓语动词要采用虚拟语气，即should+do，should可以省略。 3）double，双的。 4）关于William Low提出该方案的时间，实际应该是大约在1866年，而不是1860年。

Forty-two years later a tunnel was actually begun.	1）actually，实际上。其形容词原形为actual（实际的）。 2）be begun，文中表示“开始被建造”。
If, at the time, the British had not feared the invasion, it would have been completed.	1）at the time指的是上一句话中提到的forty-two years later。 2）本句话是针对过去发生的事情的虚拟，注意主从句的动作都要用完成时。 3）complete，完成。
The world had to wait almost another 100 years for the Channel Tunnel. It was officially opened on March 7,1994, finally connecting Britain to the European continent.	1）注意句中的100年指的是二十世纪初期准备建造隧道的时间，距离新的隧道建成的时间差不多是100年。 2）officially，正式地。 3）connect...to...，把...与...连接起来。 4）注意句中提到的隧道正式通车的日期应该是1994年5月6日，而不是3月7日。
