pity

【源】

13世纪初期进入英语，直接源自古法语的pitet，意为“怜悯”；最初源自拉丁语的pietatem，意为“虔诚”。

【音】

['pɪti]

【义】

pity用作名词时，主要表示“同情；遗憾”。如：

I helped her out of love, not out of pity.我帮助她是出于爱，而不是出于同情。It's a pity that I have to get back to the grindstone.遗憾的是我不得不回去工作。

pity也常用作动词，表示“同情；怜惜”。如：

I pity anyone who has to feed a family on such a low income.我同情任何需要以如此微薄的收入养活全家的人。He does not want to be pitied.他不想要人家可怜他。

注意句中的advice是不可数名词，表示“忠告；建议”。如：
