Lesson 69 The car race

There is a car race near our town every year. In 1995, there was a very big race.

There were hundreds of people there. My wife and I were at the race. Our friends, Julie and Jack were there, too. You can see us in the crowd. We are standing on the left.

There were twenty cars in the race. There were English cars, French cars, German cars, Italian cars, American cars and Japanese cars.

It was an exciting finish. The winner was Billy Stewart. He was in car number fifteen. Five other cars were just behind him.

On the way home, my wife said to me, “Don’t drive so quickly! You’re not Billy Stewart!”

There were hundreds of people there.

本课继续学习一般过去时，但侧重的是There was/were的用法，主要用来描述过去在某地有某人或某物。其基本用法为：

There was/were + 名词 + 地点

其中，was的后面接的是单数可数名词或不可数名词，were的后面接的是复数可数名词。

如：

There were hundreds of people there.

其否定句为：

There was/were + not + 名词 + 地点

如：

There were not hundreds of people there.

其一般疑问句为：

Was/Were + there + 名词 + 地点

如：

- Were there hundreds of people there?
- Yes, there were.
- No, there weren't.

其特殊疑问句的用法为：

特殊疑问词 + was/were + there + 名词 + 地点

如：

Where were there hundreds of people?

【注意】

本课出现了一般过去时的新标志性词语，即：in+过去年份或年代，如：

in 2003 在2003年
in the 1970s 在二十世纪七十年代

注意在双课第70课中，出现了表时间的介词at、on、in的用法，其基本区别是：

1、at+时刻，如：

at 7 o'clock 在七点整
at seven past nine 在九点过七分
at two to two 在两点差两分（即一点五十八分）

2、on+星期或日期，如：

on Sunday 在周日
on January 1st 在1月1日（在元旦）

3、in+月份/季度/年份，如：

in April 在四月份
in spring 在春天
in 2020 在2020年
