A 64-year-old woman presents with progressive left upper quadrant pain over several months with concern for splenomegaly.
A CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis was performed with intravenous and oral contrast. Axial, sagittal, and coronal images in soft-tissue window are shown below.
There is a large (approximately 15 cm), well-circumscribed heterogeneous mass in the left upper quadrant arising from the greater curvature of the stomach with internal areas of necrosis and vascularity. There is no evidence of invasion into adjacent structures or distant metastatic disease.
Diagnosis: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST)
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal neoplasm, occurring throughout the gastrointestinal tract, mesentery, omentum, and retroperitoneum.
They most frequently occur in the stomach (70%), followed by the small intestines (20% to 25%), and anorectum (7%), colon, and esophagus.
