(1935-2015) - Japanese artist. Born in the city of Jeonju (now the administrative center of the Jeolla-buk-do province in South Korea) in the family of a well-known artist at that time,
Morimoto Nihei. In 1943, at the age of six, he emigrated with his father to Japan, to the city of Ichinoseki in Iwate Prefecture, where he lived until 1952, after which he moved to Tokyo.
In 1958, the future artist entered the oil painting department of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo Art University, from which he graduated in 1962. It was exhibited for the first time in 1963 at the 37th exhibition of the Kokugakai Art Association, where it immediately won the first prize.
In 1976, Sosuke traveled to France to study European painting, especially classical portrait and landscape techniques. Upon returning to his homeland, Sosuke took up his own work, quickly achieving wide recognition.
In Japan, Morimoto Sosuke is considered the pioneer of classical oil painting and a recognized master in the neoclassical genre. At the beginning of his creative career, he preferred to paint still lifes, experimenting with light, texture and space in his work.
However, portraiture brought real recognition to the artist. After a long search, in 1979, Sosuke found his muse - a wonderful model, to which he devoted almost all subsequent portrait works, where strict, cold, melancholic and even destructive female beauty attracts with the aesthetics of a combination of oriental charm and European elegance.
