so that 表目的＝in order that,从句中常用 may, might, can, could ,will ,would ,shall，be able to等情态动词。
so that 表结果，从句一般不用情态动词，前面一般用逗号与主句隔开，常用一般过去时。
1.We left early so that/in order that we could catch the first bus.
2.She left early so that/in order that (以便)she could catch the train. （目的）
3.She left early so that （所以）she could catch the train.（结果）
4.He got up late, so that he didn’t get to work on time.
5.His bike was broken, so that he had to walk home.(表结果)
6.He raised his voice so that everybody could hear him.（表目的）
若从句与主句的主语一致，so that可换成in order that/in order to 或so as to不定式短语。In order that/to可放在句首、句中。so as to不能放在句首。
7.They took a taxi so that/in order that they could get there earlier.
8.They took a taxi in order to/so as to get there earlier.
9.In order to(不可以换成so as to) get there earlier, they took a taxi.
