全球第一重灾区现场，CNN主播与纽约州长直播上演兄弟争宠

The United States has overtaken China as the country hardest hit by the coronavirus with more than 83,000 confirmed cases.

You and I must have the same question, that is, how did this happen to the most powerful country in the world even after China gave a very early warning about the severity of the outbreak more than two months ago. 

Well, there must be a lot of reasons that can explain this, but I think the most important of them all is arrogance. So today we are going to talk about the price of arrogance.

美国全国新冠病毒确诊人数破8万3千例，正式超越中国，成为全球受此次疫情影响最为严重的国家。

我们都有同样的疑问，为何在两个多月之前，中国就已经就此次新冠疫情严重程度给出预警的情况之下，在全世界最为强大的国家——美国的事态仍然发展到如此严重的地步。

当然有很多原因可以解释，但我觉得最为重要的原因是自大。那今天我们就来聊一聊自大的代价。

3月26日，美国确诊人数已超过中国和意大利，成为目前确诊病例最多的国家。

至今，全美50个州和华盛顿特区无一幸免于此次疫情。其中“重灾区”纽约州每天都增加数千例确诊病例，其病例占全国总数近一半。

既然今天我们聊的是美国，本期《Albert说英闻》不妨换一个有趣的思路，那就是隔着大西洋，从英国人的角度去看一下美国发生的事。

我们来看英国大名鼎鼎的的《独立报/The Independent》是如何报道的：

美国50个州的州长都称作governor，文章开头就提到了美国纽约州州长Andrew Cuomo，注意开头的New York指的是纽约州/State of New York，并不是纽约市/New York City(NYC)。

另外，纽约市是纽约州乃至美国第一大城市，不过它并不是纽约州的首府，纽约州的首府是其中东部的奥尔巴尼/Albany。

说到纽约州州长Andrew Cuomo，他有个弟弟叫Chris Cuomo，是美国CNN的一位主播。

不久之前，Chris在节目上就连线自己的哥哥，两人在谈论疫情期间宵禁问题时却突然翻起了小时候的旧账，最后还上演了一场家族争宠大戏——到底谁是老妈最爱的儿子？

先是弟弟暗示哥哥不关心妈妈：“无论你工作多努力，总该有时间给妈妈打个电话吧。“

哥哥立刻回击：“我刚才就给她打了电话！顺便说一下，妈妈说，我是她最爱的孩子。By the way, she said I was her favorite.”

弟弟急着说：“她才不会这么说！”

哥哥继续火上浇油：“好消息是，你是她第二喜欢的儿子啦！/ Good news is she said you are her second favorite, second favorite son, Christopher.”（其实家里就两个儿子）

很多人看到这个视频后都忍俊不禁，要知道这两兄弟一个62岁，一个49岁，结果斗起嘴来跟两个小男孩争宠没两样。

我们回到文章，来看demand这个词，作为“要求；命令”这个意思来讲，对应的是中文里的祈使语气。

demand后面接的除了可以是一个名词，也可以是一个完整的句子，就像文章里的New York City come up with a plan to limit...。

整句话其实就相当于 New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has demanded that New York City...，很多时候that可以被省略掉，所以我们以后要通过类似的句子来慢慢培养这样的语感。

句子后面Andrew Cuomo要求的内容就是让纽约市拿出一个方案come up with a plan来做到下面两件事：

to limit the density of its public areas/要控制住纽约市公共区域的密度

to limit contact with other people/要控制住和他人的接触

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has demanded New York City come up with a plan to limit the density of its public areas as weekend crowds appear to ignore officials' warnings to stay indoors and limit contact with other people during the coronavirus pandemic.

He said that "the density level in the city is wholly inappropriate".

"I don't know what they're not understanding", he said during a briefing on Sunday. "This is not life as usual. .... It's insensitive, it's arrogant, it's self-destructive, it's disrespectful to other people, and it has to stop, and it has to stop now. This is not a joke and I am not kidding."

  

Exactly a month after Donald Trump tweeted that the US had the coronavirus outbreak “very much under control”, the World Health Organization delivered a stark and jarring reality check: America faces being the centre of a pandemic that has paralysed much of the world.
