飓风来袭动物们怎么办

More than one million people have been ordered to evacuate North and South Carolina and parts of Virginia in advance of Hurricane Florence.

But how do animals cope when a hurricane bears down on them?

Some animals evacuate quickly.

 In 2011, New York was struck by tropical storms Irene and Lee in quick succession. 

2011年，热带风暴艾琳(Irene)和李(Lee)接连袭击了纽约。

Biologists had tagged striped bass fish living in the Hudson River estuary the previous year, and could therefore track how the fish rapidly left their estuarine waters and swam along the coast — behaviour that had not been recorded before.

 However, the fish responded only once the storms had struck, possibly reacting to changes in the water flow.

Other animals, however, can predict an impending storm and flee in good time.

Before Hurricane Gabrielle hit Florida in 2001, blacktip sharks that had been tagged with radio trackers suddenly swam from their usual shallow waters to deeper seas before the hurricane struck.

After the storm had passed, the sharks returned.

This was no isolated incident: the same phenomenon happened before Hurricane Charley struck Florida three years later.

It is thought that the sharks sensed the approaching storm from a fall in water pressure, which they can detect using highly sensitive pressure sensors.

Their reaction to these pressure changes meant that they avoided being hurled out of the water by the storm.

It is not only fish that can forecast storms.

In 2013, golden-winged warblers in the mountains of Tennessee sensed a severe thunderstorm 560 miles away.

They flew long distances to safety, one bird even flying 930 miles to Cuba to escape the threat.

Remarkably, the birds had just completed a long migration from South America, but they still found the energy to escape the storm.

 It is thought that the birds had probably picked up warning signs of the imminent danger from infrasound waves given off by the storm.
