天一阁的历史非常悠久，最早可追溯至明嘉靖年间，至今已有400多年历史，为当时隐退的明朝兵部侍郎范钦主持建造的藏书楼，并命名为“天一阁”，是当今现存亚洲最古老的私人藏书阁。

作为藏书阁，天一阁是一座以“藏书文化”为核心，集藏书保护、研究、陈列、教育及旅游参观为一体的专题性博物馆，且是国家一级博物馆，其规模也是十分庞大，占地约26000平方米（约40亩），由藏书文化区、陈列展览区和园林休闲区组成，人们每每游览之时，都能深深地感受到这座私家园林的婉约秀美及文化底蕴。

天一阁藏书楼整体坐北朝南，是一座两层砖木结构的硬山顶重楼式建筑，整体高约9米，远远的望去，可以看到这座楼阁极具特色，斜坡屋顶上青瓦覆盖，掩映在茂密的丛林间，加之四周园林式布局，为典型的江南庭院式园林特色建筑群，古色古香的气息油然而生。
Located in the north and facing the south, Tianyi Pavilion Library is a two-story brick and wood structure of gable roof tower type building, with an overall height of about 9 meters.
整个天一阁还是有许多看点的，主要景点包括古戏台、秦氏支祠、麻将起源地陈列馆、庄园厅、博雅堂、天一阁、东园、千晋斋、东明草堂、尊经阁、司马第、范式故居、明州碑林等，若是大体概括，就是南园和东园，院落内文物众多，十分丰富，是到这里游玩主要参观的。

天一阁内有几座建筑非常有特色，硬山顶重楼式的宝书楼（天一阁），重檐歇山顶式的尊经阁，而东园内的假山、明池、长廊、碑林及亭阁更是有一种置身于苏州园林的感觉。
There are several distinctive buildings in Tianyi Pavilion. The gable roof double tower style book building (Tianyi Pavilion), the double eaves resting on the top of the mountain style Sutra Pavilion, and the rockery, bright pool, long corridor, stele forest and pavilions in the east garden have a feeling of being in the Suzhou garden.
天一阁藏书数量非常多，包含各类古籍近30万卷，数量众多让人震撼，这些古籍主要以地方志、登科录等史料类书籍居多。除此之外，这里还珍藏着丰富的字画、碑帖、陶瓷、铜器及玉器等工艺精品，琳琅满目的艺术品，让人眼花缭乱。
The Tianyi Pavilion has a large collection of books, including nearly 300000 volumes of various ancient books, with a staggering number. These ancient books are mainly based on historical materials such as local chronicles and imperial records.
很多到这里游玩的人或许对“天一阁”名字的由来也非常感兴趣，关于“天一阁”的得名有两种说法。
Many visitors here may also be very interested in the origin of the name "Tianyi Pavilion", and there are two ways of saying its name.
其一，清代学者全祖望在《天一阁碑目录》中写道，范钦曾在建造之初于天一阁下建造一水池，后又搜集了许多碑刻，其中就包含“龙虎山天一池石刻”，天一阁由此得名；
Firstly, Qing Dynasty scholar Quan Zuwang wrote in the "Catalogue of Steles of Tianyi Pavilion" that Fan Qin built a water pool at the beginning of the construction, and later collected many inscriptions, including the "Longhu Mountain Tianyi Pool Stone Carvings", from which Tianyi Pavilion was named;
其二，因楼阁为藏书阁，为防火而取《易经》中的“天一生水，地六成之”之意得名天一阁。
Secondly, due to the fact that the pavilion is a collection of books, it was named Tianyi Pavilion after the meaning of "Heaven generates water and the earth becomes sixty percent" in the Book of Changes for fire prevention.
天一阁的历史
天一阁的创建人名叫范钦，明嘉靖年间人，官至兵部右侍郎。范钦喜好读书和藏书，他毕生费尽心血和钱财，倾力收集各地的公私刻本，政书实录，地方志，诗文集锦，科举士录等等，退隐还乡后，主持修建了天一阁，用于存放、收藏历年所收集到的数万册书籍。
The founder of Tianyi Pavilion was named Fan Qin, who was born during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty and was appointed as the Right Attendant of the Ministry of War. Fan Qinxi is fond of reading and collecting books.
乾隆年间，令纪晓岚编撰《四库全书》时，天一阁进呈珍本书籍641种，数量上名列全国第二，但质量一流，包含大量珍本、善本。为表彰天一阁对《四库全书》的贡献，乾隆特颁谕旨，恩赏天一阁《古今图书集成》一部以示嘉奖，并下旨仿天一阁建造文渊阁等“内廷四阁”，用于保存《四库全书》四个抄本。
During the Qianlong period, when Ji Xiaolan was ordered to compile the "Complete Book of Four Treasures", Tianyi Pavilion presented 641 rare books, ranking second in quantity in the country, but with first-class quality, including a large number of rare and rare books.
范钦为天一阁订立了苛刻、特殊的“家规”，包括规定藏书归子孙共有，“代不分书，书不出阁”，非各房齐集书橱钥匙，不得开锁。外姓人、女眷不得进去藏书楼等等，就是因为这些苛刻的规定，才使得天一阁七万多卷藏书能够默默地、隐秘地存在着、延续着。

范家不但不允许外姓人进入藏书阁，还恪守女子不得进入藏书楼的“家规”。相传，宁波知府有一侄女名叫钱绣云，是一个酷爱读书的才女。她十分仰慕天一阁之名，为了求得登阁读书的机会，托太守为媒嫁入范家。
The Fan family not only does not allow outsiders to enter the library, but also adheres to the "family rules" that prohibit women from entering the library. According to legend, there is a niece named Qian Xiuyun in the governor of Ningbo.
婚后，钱绣云满怀希望，以为这下终于如愿以偿了！但是，她万万没想到，范家人严格执行“女眷不得进去藏书楼”的家规，她虽已成了范家媳妇，她还是不能登楼看书。钱绣云郁郁含恨而终，遗命夫君将她葬于阁边，愿以芳魂与书作伴，了却她另一种“青灯黄卷”的夙愿。
After marriage, Qian Xiuyun was full of hope, thinking that she had finally achieved her wish! However, she never expected that the Fan family strictly followed the family rules of "no women allowed to enter the library".
四百余年间，天一阁可谓历尽波折，命运多舛。天一阁所历经的灾难中遇到的“人祸”更大！它遭遇了鸦片战争、太平天国等战祸、盗贼盗窃、抗战中被炸毁等等劫难，可以说，天一阁每一册古籍能流传至今，都是十分艰辛和幸运的。
For over four hundred years, Tianyi Pavilion has gone through many twists and turns, and its fate has been full of ups and downs. The disasters experienced by Tianyi Pavilion have led to even greater 'human disasters'!
作为一座私人藏书楼，天一阁风风雨雨四百年，历经13代，饱受时局动荡与战乱之苦，至今巍然屹立，堪称一个文化奇迹！
