Science is the captured territory; and hehind it are those secure regions in which knowledge and art build our imperfect and marvelous world. Philosophy seems stand still, perplexed; but only because she leaves the fruits of victory to her daughters the sciences, and herself passes on, divinely discontent, to the uncertain and unexplored.

开始扯闲篇：

这段继续谈论科学与哲学的关系。哲学永远朝向还未曾被探索的领域（to the uncertain and unexplored），而把已经捕获的世界（captured territory）留给科学这个虽不完美（imperfect）但却精彩非凡（marvelous）的世界。哲学在疑惑不解（perplexed）中才有自身的价值，因为不满足（divinely discontent）而不断超越自身（passes on）。

哲学的迷人之处，不在于已知，恰恰在于对未知充满了好奇，astonishment是哲学探索永不停滞的不竭动力。这就又回到亚里士多德的那句话：All men by nature desire to know.

他说：An indication of this is the delight we take in our senses; for even apart from their usefulness they are loved for themselves; and above all otherss the sense of sight.

他从人的直觉之乐来论述人性好学。

说到哲学与科学的关系，我们又需要回到这个字，metaphysics，physics是对物之理的探索，探索之后发现它的背后必须有一套逻辑在其作用，这就从physics走向了metaphysics，meta，我们前面已经解释过，就是“元”。所谓“元理论”，就是理论的理论。最近比较火的，是元宇宙，元，就用这个字meta。还有元数学，元逻辑学等，都属于这一类。

说到这里，我们似乎不得不面对science这个字了。这个字的字根，表示know，certainty，即是知晓，确定。哲学思考不确定的事，确定了的就交给她的女儿们——sciences。也就是说，科学是逐渐地从哲学中分化出来的。

最初的科学可以说是超自然主义、自然主义、神秘主义和科学的一种奇异的混合。土、气、水、火的四行学说曾经占据科学领域很长一段时间，后来从占星术里分化出天象学或天文学，如开普勒用数学来描述行星运动就让占星术变成了天文学；从炼金术里分化出医学和化学，如波义耳是一名炼金术士，他将原子理论引入炼金术，就终结了炼金术，产生了化学……世界的存在表明，一位有智慧的创造者和设计者，是the first cause。实际上，他无时无刻不在护理着他所创造的一切。

科学的界限就在有知与无知之间。越过有知，进入无知，就是哲学。As one comes into the border regions and beyond, one passes from science into the filed of speculation. This sepculuation activity is a kind of exploration and this, among other things, is what philosophy is. 这里罗素所讲的哲学，显然跟古希腊对哲学的定义，已经有一些距离了。

哲学是去探索，是去独立思考。One is to accept the pronouncements of people who say they know. The other way is to go out and look for oneself, and this is the way of science and philosophy.

我们应该竭力把自己的accepting mind修炼为inquirying（speculating） mind。据说有一位世界顶级的大学校长说过这么一句话：教育的目的就在于让我们能够辨明谁在胡说八道。大概，这就是我们具备inquirying mind的真正意义。
